Odd issue starting ninja 250 - August 16, 2007, 02:35 PM

Bike is an 05 ninja 250, ~3.4k miles

Back when we first got it, it started fine with the choke. IE, start it up and adding choke would help and smooth out.

Then i got some bad gas, and took it to the dealership. They pulled the carbs, and resynched them and i *think* they replaced the jets as well.

When i got it back, it had a pretty weak idle. (still does). i was just so happy that i A: got the bike back, and B: they didnt charge us for the work when they could have (bad gas is not covered under warranty) that i didnt complain or say anything.

The idle is a bit stronger now but not great. It's the starting that is odd. My start up procedure now is that i have to hit ignition, get it to turn over, then goose the throttle a bit to get the rpms up, then add choke. If i add choke without the throttle it will die. It's pretty annoying since i didnt have this prob before.

Any ideas? i know there is an idle adjustment screw somewhere i just wanted to get some second opinions before i started messing with it.

I believe i can see the future;
because everyday i repeat the
same routine.

the choke all the way, or just half when your adding it in? idle should be about 1500 rpm on that machine.

PM me if your in H'Town, MD.

If it's been sitting for a while your gas could have gone bad again. It happens more easily with the newer gas formulations. They evaporate the combustables more easily...leaving you with crappy gas and sludge in your fuel system.

Been there done that on my dirtbike.

Mine idles at 1100. I have the same problem occasionally, but it goes away after a few days.

Maybe it's me, but your starting procedure seems backwards. Every single one of my carbed bikes, hell even weed trimmers, start with the choke on full THEN hit the starter and apply throttle if needed. Next drop to half choke or drop it off all at once depending on how strong it's running.
