Oil weight and viscosity - August 19, 2011, 01:34 PM

Hey all, I was looking for some info on the type of oil to use in my bike. Currently riding a ninja 250 and the manufacturer's recommended weight is 10W-40 but when I went to go shopping for oil I couldn't find any synthetics in the 10W-40 range that weren't for "High Mileage cars". I had wanted to use the Shell Rotella which only comes in 5W-40 and 15W-40, would the 15W-40 be okay for the extreme heat/cold range around these parts (I imagine the 5W-40 would be too light, but my automotive/motorcycle knowledge is incredibly limited so I could be wrong).

15W-40 will be fine.

Basically pick a good brand name, stick with it. Oil viscosity and additives are really all over the place. Each manufacturer will pick the standard they want to adhere to....but there isn't an overall standard. One brand's 10-40 isn't necessarily the same as another brands.

I use the Rotella in my dirtbike's transmission/clutch due to the auto-clutch I installed. Never had a problem and I have abised that bike mercilessly for hours on end. (Fat bastard on top, big mountains.)

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back....Chileeeeee's bay back...
