Opinions? - August 24, 2012, 09:46 AM

Chain after about three weeks of use. Yes, it's the master and yes the master is a different manufacturer than the chain. No, it wasn't done by a bad wench, it's a good shop and they're working with me to get it fixed properly. I found the break when I got back in from about six or seven hours of doing errands and riding the GWMP.

Opinions/comments on this?

Interesting. This is the first non-anecdotal evidence I've seen of such a failure.

Wow.

Side note: excellent job conducting an inspection of your bike. There's a reason the MSF stresses performing a TCLOCS inspection every time you ride.

Good job

Odd that it snapped there, and only on one side. Maybe a defect in the actual plate itself in manufacturing?

Most definitely some bad luck.

Goddamn. I'm giving my chain a real good once over RIGHT now.

Very glad you caught it before it broke and caused a major incident

Was your chain tension correctly set?

Not blaming, just asking.

Couldn't be - we haven't met up yet so you don't know my ride.

Tension seemed fine. Nothing I noticed until I went to lube after a ride and saw the break.

A closeup picture of the surface of the broken parts should allow to tell if it failed due to mechanical stress or because it was defected. Any signs of rust "inside" the crack?

When I get the pieces off I'll take more pics, close ups and post.

Yeah...

I'd love to see them.

Would you mind if i take these and further pictures to my next MSF class to help drive a point home about TCLOCS?

Also, have you removed the offending chain yet? I'd really love to see it in person

Feel free. Whenever non-riders tell me they're thinking about riding the first words out of my mouth are take the MSF.

No, it's the ml so I'm going to replace it with the one the shop sends. Never done it before so I hope I don't mess it up.

That is a first. Changing a master link is easy. You just need the proper tool.
Something like this.

Yeah, just be careful not to let the clip fly away and get lost when you try to slide it into position... I've done that before. Also make sure the open end is facing the opposite direction of where it will be rotating towards (so if debris hits the clip it won't be able to make it come undone).
