tire fitment question, help please - June 15, 2008, 02:26 AM

I know plenty about fitting tires when it comes to cars, but know nothing about it when it comes to bikes.

could someone tell me what is the pros and cons about fitting a tire that is a different size than OEM on the OEM rim?

I was looking at the new 2008 Ninja 250R and saw that the rear is a 130/70-17. Well, Michelin Pilot Powers dont come in that size (not even for the front).. But they do make a 120/70-17. Is it possible to put a narrower tire on the OEM rim and what the effects of the handling and such?

Unfortunately, there's not many tires out there that provide really good grip at 130/70-17. Btw, the new 250R fronts are 110/70-17, which Michelin Pilot Powers do come in. I'm just looking for a well-matched rear tire for the bike as well.

there are definatly tires out there, while limited in choices they are there. i would not put a front tire on the rear of your bike... they are labeled front use ony for a reason. you could possible go to a 150/60/17 w/o any problems but since i'm not real familiar with the ninja 250 dont take my work on it.

what tire came on the bike? is there a reason that you dont want to go back to the same one?

There are plenty of choices or the 250. I would stick to the proper OEM size. Motorcycle tires react mor drastically to to being mounted on the wrong wheel width. Hell with a whole 28hp youh really need Pilot Powers

coming from racing cars on r-compounds and street tires, I get soo spoiled when it comes to driving on non-OEM tires (unless it happens to be a Porsche GT3 with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups). So when it comes to riding the bike, there's a ton of lines that I can't take while on the bike (namely 4 tires vs 2 is a huge enough difference that I won't take chances on).

I actually don't know what comes with the bike, but I started looking last night and I wondered "who in the hell makes a 130/70/17 rear for that bike that is sticky enough?"

I like watching overseas gymkhanas, but most of those race classes they run on r-compounds or some kind of overseas street tire that we dont get here in the states for their 250s and 400cc bikes.

is there that huge of a difference of tire construction that would make a "front only" tire that is only used as a front tire?? Cuz I see a lot of the bigger liter bikes run tires that are wider up front than the rear of a 250.

well, that's what i wanted to know of what happens if there's a change in teh tires sizes that's different from OEM. i know on a car it's more relaxed (as you can fit various sizes based on the rim width and what you are trying to do with the setup and purpose). i just dont know what happens when you change it on the bike.

If Michelin Pilot Powers do come in that size for even a 28 hp bike, I'll still take it. You can never have enough tire.

As Travis mentioned, PSDs are great. I went with one of the only 120 rears there are, the MT75 Pirellis. I'm loving them. With a 2.5" wide rear wheel, a 120 tire is better suited than the 130. You may have more choices nowadays with the 17s vs the 16s that came on mine and all 86-07 250s. Usually, stock is garbage. We'll be doing back to back testing of mine vs a 2008 VERY soon, keep your eyes open. Narrower tires in general give you more flickablilty. Wider tires, in general, give you a little more stability. Rear tire selection will effect your gearing slightly depending on which way you go. I dropped about 2-3 mph topping out in 6th with the 120/80 tire vs the 130/80 stocker.

As for never having "enough" tire, if you were referring to the edges of the tires, on stock 130/80s and the 120/80s, the footpegs/toes grind before I can get to the edge. A taller tire would help, as would rearsets. Have fun.

I forgot to mention that, just like the 250, the ZX12 comes with a tire that is a bit larger than "optimal" (depending on WHO you talk to). Its a 6" rim and I rock a 180/55 tire for a number of reasons, one of which is because it gives a wider contact patch. Its stable to 208 mph on GPS, the 250 with the narrower 120 tire was super stable at 113ish on GPS.

so there's only a very few 120 rear tires? So how is the construction of a "front only" tire differ from a rear tire? Is it that much that the side walls are that different in design?

As for a car, we cheat the hell out of mounting tires for asymmetrical or directional tires when it comes to track use just to get the most miles of them. There's really no advantage out of a directional or asymetrical tire that is mounted in the wrong direction or inside-facing-out when the weather conditions are dry.

Could someone explain the difference in construction of a front tire and a rear tire even if the tire sizes are the same?? I know there's a reason for it, but who knows what that reason is other than weight capacity???
