Too much oil - July 21, 2009, 01:07 PM

I changed the oil in my bike about 180 miles ago....has been running just fine since I changed it, but I've noticed that i stand the bike upright it looks like it's just BARELY above the max fill line(2003 yamaha r1) I mean the slightest lean to the left and it's right where it needs to be. So my question is, is this ok how it is? If not, do I have to drain the entire crankcase and refill it again, or can I just drain a tiny bit of oil?

I put too much oil in one time. Go to 7-11 and get the longest straw you can find (not slurpee kind). when the bike is cold, open the oil cap and stick the straw down into it. place ur finger on the top to hold the straw full, and pull it back out. repeat 100x. it's a bitch, but after about 20-30 mins, it'll be down some.

just be careful that you don't get small rocks or any crap stuck to the straw when you put it into the bike

ps - this is the "clean" way without spilling oil everywhere. go with mikeeb's method if you don't feel like spending a lot of time

Over filling can cause too much pressure and result in a blown seal. You probably aren't over enough to worry about. Next time you change the oil just check with the bike upright more often.

Isn't the concern with too much oil bubbles in the oil thereby increasing friction rather than the pressure thing? Just curious.

Anyway OP, it doesn't seem like you put in that much excess to cause a problem.

Yes.
If you have to much oil the crankshaft counterweights hit the oil.
That causes foaming/bubbles in the oil and can cause lots of problems like cavitation.
OP...just loosen the oil drain plug enough for some oil to seep out. Spray brake cleaner on the plug after tightening to clean up any mess.
Problem solved.
