Used Bike Tune-up - April 25, 2010, 05:33 PM

My girl picked up a Ninja 250 (2007 - 8500 miles) today and I rode it home from Gaithersburg for her. The owner said it had been sitting for about 2 years in his garage and he had done nothing to it to prepare it to be sitting that long. The bike "runs" but it has virtually no pickup and lacks any power whatsoever. It can get up to speed and is operational but it takes longer than I would imagine it should to do so.

Any advice on what I can do/check for to get it back in good shape? I'm going to do the oil change, replace the gas in it, and change the spark plugs but was wondering if anybody had any other tips on what to do/look for.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

oil, oil filter, new gas, seafoam to clean lines, pull carbs and clean them. chain lube, plugs. Check petcock in tank as that old gas probabl was gummy, check for rust in the tank if it was not stored full.

Sorry bout the kid, could be a blesssing in disguise. From previous threads, wrap it up till your really ready. Good luck with the bike and get her some proper gear. Good riding starts prepared.

pilot jets in carbs rough idle = dirty

no top end / rough top end means main jets dirty

Good luck finding the carbs... It's fuel injected. Throttle bodies should need nothing.

I would've changed the oil/filter and gas before even trying to start it.

After that...
- If still crap, blow out or replace air filter.
- See how it runs.
- If still crap, replace plugs.
- See how it runs.
- If still crap, seafoam a vac line.

Yeah it's carburated. I added seafoam to the tank and filled her up, did the oil and spark plugs and while replacing the spark plugs (you have to remove the gas tank) I noticed the hoses from the carburator to the air box were not attached correctly causing gaps straight into the carburator. I reattached the hoses and she purrs like a kitten now!

+3 mechanical points for edicwhun!

Thank you everyone for the tips/suggestions
