What causes a throttle to get stiffer? - October 24, 2013, 08:11 PM

So the throttle on my FZ8 has been getting noticeably stiffer, it has really gotten a lot heavier the last few days especially. It's not sticking, it returns to close easily, but it's difficult to pull open. It got really bad this afternoon, got a sore arm just holding the thing open on the highway. I put Cable Life lube down both the clutch and throttle cables over the weekend (no issues with the clutch cable), took the throttle housing apart, wiped and sprayed it inside with silicon grease, and verified that there's no friction under the throttle tube.
The only thing left to do is check the throttle bodies side of things I guess, but barring any abnormal dragging or obstructions going on there, what else should I look for?

Thanks in advance.

Graphite on the bar between it and the throttle tube? Pull cable pinched somewhere? When you had the throttle apart, did you verify that the cables move freely and easily in their housings?

You're welcome in anticipated retrospect.

It's either pinching somewhere, or seriously needs lube. I'd guess pinching. Check to make sure it isn't coming off the guide in the throttle housing. How is the cable routing? It doesn't take much to get it to drag. Usually it's in both directions. But the vibration might help it close. Maybe.

Well I'm still not sure what it was but it's all better. Opened the housing again, wiggled the cables, sprayed even more lube on them, cursed at them, and went for a ride. Buttery smooth. Thanks again.

Nice. I was going to say that he probably made the mistake of stroking the throttle instead of just twisting it.
