Akuma Helmets - June 28, 2008, 06:34 PM

So I just read the announcement on the Akuma site that their helmets are now available through costco.com which is great. They're not that expensive ($299) for all the cool tech stuff in the helmet. LED light in front of helmet for night map reading or whatever, recently announced Integrated bluetooth tech in the helmets for mp3's, cell phones, and helmet to helmet comm system, the new T.O.D face shield which goes from clear to tinted by a touch of a button (available July). i'm actually most excited about the TOD face shield which would eliminate carrying multiple shields. Anyway, just thought i'd pass the word along, i'm only excited b/c i'm in the market for a new helmet and have been doing a lot of reading up on these helmets.

and lastly a fun little review read on the helmet: review

The led light sounds pretty useless, but Bluetooth v2 might be interesting.

i got the specter style b/c straight black matches anything. would feel a bit weird wearing a fighter jet or blackhawk on my head.

as for size, if you do get one, they fit 1 size small... so either try them on first or order 1 size bigger. i have an abnormally XL head, ordered an XL, and the cheek pads fit very VERY snug, making my face look like buddha.

overall, air flow is great, visibility is great, and i cannot wait for the TOD visor to come out.

eeyore got nothing on me.

Not sure how I feel about buying a helmet from Costco. I DEFINITELY won't buy one from Walmart.
Not saying Costco's helmets are bad, just not my personal preference.

costco just happens to be another vendor that they struck a deal with. They have them at dealerships too like Valley Cycle Center in Winchester. I just like the fact you can get it costco cheap through their bulk discount. Rather pay the $299 at costco than straight through their website $419

I would like to see more designs too, though if i end up doing air force then i wouldn't have a problem buying the air force helmet.

oh and apparently akuma is working with Gator Customs on some helmets to incorporate their Gator Glass tech, which allows whatever the design is to illuminate. I think it looks pretty cool, would add a little more night visibility too I think
