Old helmets, what to do with them? - May 21, 2014, 08:44 AM

what do you do with an old helmet, one that is past its 5 year life? Can they be recycled? I know some of you "collect" them, but im not much of a hoarder...

I've heard you can donate them to EMTs for practice.

I've heard of people selling them on craigslist and such as costume apparel, not for actual protection.

if they mean something to me, I save them... if it's just an old lid? Tossed. Or destroyed, that's kinda fun too.

If I have crashed in it, I keep it to remind me of the mistake(s) I made.

If it's out of date and doesn't look particularly cool, trash can.

Great timing on this thread.....was just considering what to do with my old lids.

I have four helmets, one of which I am considering getting rid of. My first helmet was an HJC which is well past the 5 year mark but I still have cause she was my first. Can't toss the signed AGV Rossi helmet even though I went down in it and it is damaged....saved my head.

I am considering using the HJC to test out painting just to see what kinda cool stuff I can come up with.

If I still have it, it's because I like the graphics/design, otherwise I sell before it's of no use protection wise to anyone.

I'll probably place it in a display but, I think that can get expensive.

Love the Arai display - gives me ideas. I've got a plain white that is going to be rotated out in about a year. I was really considering signing it (as me) and displaying it for humor, or posting up a joke ad to sell as a collectible (technically true) and asking $5 for it or something.

It's blasphemy, but I doubt I'll be doing any helmet related activities long enough to fill a room - really like seeing those displays of rows of helmets (especially the crash ones because they usually come with a story).

My helmets will probably go to someone else's wall or a trash can. My skydiving helmets are also going to have to find somewhere to go because they'd look out of place next to motorcycle lids.

Morton's BMW used to take them and donate them to a cause that gives helmets to doctors in Africa. Most of the camps they visit are only accessible by motorcycle and an out dated helmets with some damage is probably better than no helmets.

Everyone knows you don't need a helmet in Africa. You just need to ride along making the Africa face.
