Perforated vs. Solid Leather - September 30, 2006, 03:36 PM

Ok Im about to purchase a JR Sonic leather Jacket from newenough. Torn between perf or solid. If anyone has any other jacket ideas that are around the same price then let me know too.

I live in Dale City so take that into consideration for the weather.

Get the solid leather. Perforated leathers during the fall time will permit way too much air into the jacket even with the zip-in windbreaker liners that they come with. The cold air will cut right through it so it's best to have solid for the fall/winter... heck even during the summer the nights can get cold. Perforated leather/mesh/textile are perfect for the summer.

Different grades of hide come into the cost as well . You may find a solid
leather jacket cheaper than a perforated leather one that looks close to the
same. But a thinner, lower grade leather isn't going to offer you the protection
against rash and keep you warm like a thicker hide jacket. I'd find
other ways to save some money and not skimp and get the better jacket. If
you're riding this winter take a perforated jacket liner or not off your shopping
list and start looking at grades of hide instead. If you've ever ridden and gotten
cold then you know it's only going to worsen the longer you're riding. MotoGP makes
a fair priced decent grade jacket that has kept me toasty and protected.

I think at this point in the season you'd be better off going with the solid. Perf. is definitely nicer on those blazing hot days, but even with the liner you'll probably get cold with in in the coming weeks.

You may want to look for something that comes with CE rated armor, or if you do go with the Sonic buy the upgrade from NE. I'm sure to some it's a waste, but personally I think it's worth it.

You'll like the solid now, but hate it when the weather warms up and you're doing most of your riding. Unless you're planning on getting another jacket, I'd say go with the perf and just layer on the cooler days this fall/winter.

hfam,

I got 2 jackets one for summer, one spring/fall. Summer is fabric for better cooling on those hot sunny days. Leather for the night/fall/spring when its cooler or riding dirty. My jackets are made by Dainese and I had both solid and perf and didnt notice much of a difference on those hot summer days. Try www.dainese.com

FWIW, Seam stitching quality on the lower model JR jackets is questionable. Speedmaster is a better choice.

no likey the perforated jackets...

i have 3 sold leather jackets. Sure, it can get a little warm in the dead of summer, but that's only when im standing still in traffic or something. If a solid leather jacket is ventilated well enough, it's just as cool as perf...

I've also been "fixed", I can't get you pregnant.

What i meant to say was, I wear Tanya's jacket over my perforated once it gets colder out. Tanya's favorite jacket is'nt reaallly a riding jacket, bt it plays one on TV....
