Shark Helmets? Which ones are good? - July 14, 2010, 09:23 AM

i got this email from a vendor i've bought spare parts from. they have shark helmets for under $100. anyone have any experience with them on track? crash tested? quiet? airflow/cool? fit?

i use shoei X11's now and they are very quiet, cool, fit well BUT are too expensive if and when you go down on it.

From another X-11 owner, I have two of the Shark RSR2's(Shark's top of the line helmet). I personally do not like the fit and feel of the helmet compared to the X-11's. You can get really good deals on X-11's right now since the X-12 came out. Motorcycle Helmets & Gear - Buy Shoei, Arai Helmets and More has great prices.. Not sure how many they have left though.

I have a shark helmet. It was $330ish and it's a piece of shit. My $150 helmet is better. Shark is a French company, we don't like the French remember? French fries are good tho. Oh and Sharks' e-newsletter they send out... yeah it's in French - WTF?

I crashed in a Shark RSF3, it held up well enough, no issues. I now have a Shoei 1000, and very much prefer the fit and size over the Shark. I'd say my Shoei has better airflow, but both are similarly quiet. Sharks tend to have a larger outer shell, and then make up for it with LOTS of extra padding.

Personally, I don't think I'd go with a Shark again, due to the fit.

RFORC1 has similar comparison pictures.. Both are XS, note the shell size differences.

thx for the responses. i keep hearing about fit issues with shark, but helmet quality is supposedly great in all other areas.

i'm sold on the X-11's as long as i can get cheap(er). they feel good. the air flow is good. they are so quiet i never even thought to use ear plugs (and still don't). i've only had a minor crash test on one and can't count it for a major bang-up, but the noggin' was fine.

i'll stick with the Shoei X series ... for now... i'll probably pick up a spare X11 if the date is within the last year or so.

SHARK's RSR2 comes in various shell sizes unlike their lower end helmets.

The RSR2 is a RACER's helmet and with that said, the eye port is not that wide for street use, you'd have to turn your head more. It does vent alot from the top, mine swallowed a Yellow jacket in mine, good thing it died. It is a very tight fit and does not have cutouts for stems if you wear glasses which makes it uncomfy for sure. It comes with tear offs, winter mask and the shields are $100 or close and 3mm thick usually doesn't come off in a crash (see Duhamel's Daytona crash in 07 or 0. Lighter than the X-11, too.

I liked mine but only for track which is why it was sold.

I like the way my X-11 vents, has cutouts for those that wear glasses and on closeouts, you CAN'T beat it for the dollar to value you get from it IMHO. If you notice most helmets go on closeouts with manufacturer's date at about the halfway point, at least from my observations or racers jumping brands like Stoner (waiting for his GP Austrialia to go on closeouts )

Too many words? oh well

I bought my Lawson this way and don't know off hand the date but I'm pretty sure it was in 08.
