Sketchy Leathers? - October 6, 2010, 07:51 PM

ok, i finally popped my cherry and had my first big crash. a high-side in T7 @ VIR North due to too much lean angle and not enough ass off the seat.

but, check these pictures out. my top-of-the-line, 1-year-old, alpinestars 1-piece suit tore and came apart at the seams in the seat. luckily i rolled instead of sliding and i walked away with a little nick out of my right ring finger and a little sore.

those who have had experience wrecking in leathers on pavement, let me know what you think.

sketchy or to be expected?

i called aStars and the guy on the phone was being a [less than helpful]. ok, i understand that AStars policy is that they don't warranty crashed leathers and it was early in the AM in california, but don't go saying this is par for the course without seeing them.

he started breaking into the fact that he has pins in his body b/c of crashes. so, what does that have to do with my leathers? maybe he was trying to say that i need to man up.

then he said that they fix tears for their pros all the time. bs. nobody would buy this crap if it came apart after one crash. then he asked me some smart ass question i don't remember b/c i was getting pissed by this time and i just shot back that i'll go buy dainese as a response to his question. silence.

anyhow, he finally agreed to have me send in for eval and gave me an RMA.

It's the MX-1.

granted. i high-sided at 50 to 60mph so i was about 3 feet high above the bike and then hit the pavement. i believe i impacted on my right lower leg since i have the most trama there. everything above is good. don't feel even the slightest little bump or bruise. so not sure how the seat would come apart so easily.

If your not riding on the edge, why the hell did you buy the whole tire?

Astars dude said they would look at it and decide what to charge me. I'm thinking the only acceptable charge is zero considering I also have to pay for shipping to California. Almost not worth it.

Said he would do my boots no charge though. Both toe sliders popped off and the *plastic* slider connection points got ground down so I can't connect another slider. So I'll give him props for recognizing a failure in design here.

Thanks for all of your opinions.

I'm not really sure what I will do. I'll probably just have Lizzy fix them and buy elsewhere when it comes time to replace.

I just don't want to be riding around the track with the thought that my leathers might fail me in the back of my mind.
