Wearable Airbags - October 18, 2007, 09:42 AM

Years ago in Japan, we spotted a special safety vest for construction workers that inflated in the event of a fall to protect their bodies. Turns out the technology, which amounts to a personal, wearable airbag, has finally found its way to the 'States; motorcyclists use the Impact Jacket to protect them in crashes.
Also turns out it works--Maryland motorcyclist Joseph McPhatter was the first (involuntary) rider to use the jacket in a crash, as he flew 100 feet through the air and hit the pavement at an estimated speed of 140 miles per hour. His injuries were minor.
Cool, no? And now some small, collegiate part of us desperately wants to deploy the Impact Jacket during a bar brawl.

They actually had that on FOX news the other day... some dude was wearing it when he wrecked his bike and lived. Doctors say it was due to this jacket.

That's some great advertising for the Impact Jacket, that's for sure!

I don't think he was riding at 140 mph, he was ejected from his motorcycle to a speed close to 140 mph.

"...hitting the ground at an impact rate of 140 mph."

Either way an interesting invention, and the price is kind of suprising.

No he wasn't doing 140 mph they said he hit the pavement like a 140 mph impact? That statement sounds wrong. I have seen these years ago. I would not wear one cause what if it goes off when you reallydon't want it to? Problem with motorcycle wrecks is not how you hit but what you hit. You can have a 180 mph get off into a field and walk away but a 20 mph crash into a pole and die. Honda already puts airbags on the goldwing. Whats next a roll cage and sheet metal? Go buy a car!!!! they do have this neck brace for off road riding. Has saved a few neck's! http://thekneeslider.com/archives/20...le-neck-brace/

from what I understand it work by teathering to your bike, and if you leave your bike at a certain mph it goes off.

My first concern answered, "If you forget to unhook the landyard from the anchoring cable do not worry, it takes 25-35lbs of pull force to deploy the airbag system leaving enough room to minimize false inflations."
