95/395 N in HOV lane - April 5, 2007, 04:51 AM

On my way in to DC (about 5:20 AM) on the HOV lane this AM, saw what appeared to be a Honda Gold Wing, or something of that size/sort upturned with the rider in shoulder, face down. Another man (not another rider, cager) kneeling next to the rider. Don't know how bad it was, it must have happened just a few minutes before I got there cause traffic was just starting to slow up for it. Was one cop directing traffic. Hope the guy is ok.

Channel 7 and WTOP stated the rider hit an animal. The news reports are all over the map with this one, but no news yet on the rider.

Animals have made it to the HOV lanes in the past. It wouldn't be a first.

Pat, I'm just happy to hear that the rider wasn't you. I was hearing about the accident "involving a motorcycle" while watching the news at home and it occurred to me that it was around the time you would be in the HOV lanes that far north.

I know the guy, Dusty, he and his Wife, Flo are both Iron Butt Assoc. folks. He's done the 48-10 Ride (lower 48 States in 10 days) ..anyway...the guy's a retired Marine and hardcore about his riding. Story is that the front tire blew (possible tread separation...looking into it) Evidently, has a broken wrist, thumb, and maybe some cracked ribs. He's supposed to undergo surgery today/tonight but he's a pretty tough cookie. I'll post up if I hear more.

Flo works with my Pop, Pop told me this afternoon. No mention of an animal though.

Best Wishes for a quick recovery Dusty!

Oh yeah, evidently Dusty felt the tire giving way and was trying to coast it to the shoulder without hitting the front brakes but the tire shredded too quickly and probably bound up the front wheel. It's a pretty tough scenario to prevail over. Bike was his wife's bike, his is in the shop. Pretty amazing rigs if you ever saw their bikes in person. Normal gas tank and TWO fuel cells..one on the pillion (back seat) and another on a custom made rear fender platform behind the rear wheel. No stops for miles. Potty breaks? Uh no. Catheter. Might be the external kind...I never asked.

Dusty's rig (not the one in the crash though.) Total rig holds 16 gallons of fuel.

Yup, BUT there are EXTERNAL catheters that are basically like a condom with small diameter tubing attached. As I mentioned earlier, I've never asked him...something like that is best asked after a few beers..... Hey Dusty...um..what's that leaking next to your boot?

..but I agree, an internal one would definitely take the edge off of the excitement of taking a trip for me.
