Accident - 123 & Tyson's Blvd, McLean - July 10, 2009, 04:04 PM

Not sure if anyone saw this this morning around 8am. At the intersection across from Tyson's mall, 123 & Tyson's Blvd.

My wife and I, both riding our own rides were on at the intersection, waiting for the light to change from red to green. we were on tyson's blvd, turning left onto 123 heading towards mclean.

Light turns green, I roll through, as I'm going through, i see a silver 4runner on my side, running a red light. I make it through unscathed, stop and turn around, as my wife (zippy_girl) was right behind me. All i see is the 4runner and no wifey. I ride back and pull in front of the 4runner, as it is still moving back and forth. I see my wife on the ground, with the bike laying on its left side. She gets up and is yelling at the driver. I look and the driver is on top of my wife's bike's tire, and driving back and forth. I signal to the lady that she needs to turn to the right to get off the tire, which she does.

luckily, not too far from the incident is a statey. Officer Jackson. He calls it in. Wife says she feel's fine, but the rescue show up anyway. firetruck pretty much closed down 123 heading toward vienna. wife refused treatment as she wasn't feelling anyting (adrenaline and shock). County PD show up, and everything gets figured out.

lady says she didn't see the light, and thought others were going through too. I guess she didn't see the other two lanes at a complete stop.

We get all the information exchanged, pd give her a ticket for running the light. we go to work, and wife starts to feel pain and soreness (it always comes later). so i took her to the hospital and she got some xrays and ct scan. everything seems to be fine, and they gave her pain meds and stuff. I believe all the insurance is getting taken care of, and seems to be no story changing on drivers part.

wife drives a 2007 sv650 naked. its red. damage is bent handlebar, bar end damage, dented tank, shifter nub broken off, rim damage, bikini fairing damage, frame slider damage, and maybe some other stuff we couldn't tell by looking. we are probably going to take it to RNR and have the inspecter head there, that way we don't miss any hidden broken things. just gotta talk to Rick about that.

anyway, this could have been a lot worse. if i had been slower, i could have been tboned or tail spun out, had my wife been faster or done something else, she could have been tboned. we both had standard gear on, and it shows that it helped her. no road rash or anything, and she is just really sore, and may get sorer tomorrow.

so hopefully we can get her up and running again. didn't know if any of you saw it, as I know a lot of people work in that area and saw a lot of bikes riding by. just glad it wasnt worse.

Glad everything is ok! Remember, bikes can be replaced, but lives can't.

Yeah, i nearly lost it when i didn't see her behind me. I know the bike will get fixed, so no worries on that, i mean it sucks, but i'm glad she is ok.

she definitely is feeling it for hte bike though (now she knows what i use to talk about concerning bike accidents), and keeps wondering what she could have done differently, like, swerved better, or not used the brakes. but i keep telling her she did the best thing, anything else she would have been worse off (well other than not driving).

just glad she is good to go. she is napping right now, hope the soreness won't get her too much this weekend.

Yep, that's normal for her to feel blame. In 2001 I crashed my dad's old '89 Benz 300E. It was raining. Apparently, a lot of people crash at this particular light turning into Jermantown Rd. and 123 for the some reason whenever it rains. The car just started to fishtail and as I tried to control the steering, it spun and hit the guardrail. I was just accelerating from the turn.

I blamed myself for it thinking what else could I have done. But the cops said it's common there and nothing you can do when car just slips.

that was my first thought too. Didn't see a celly though. She said she didn't see it and wasn't use to driving through there. Apparenntly she was bringing her son with a broken leg somewhere. She said it was her fault and was nice. Didn't like getting the ticket though.

Glad your wife is OK and congrats on keeping your calm. I would not have been able to in your situation.
