Angry Because she was late, I wrecked... - May 21, 2009, 10:52 AM

SO.... upon checking out of my hotel this morning I go to my bike and get it ready to head to work. I was staying at the Holiday Inn off of Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown. For those of you who are not familiar with the area, Wisconsin is a four lane road (at this point) with two lanes north bound, and two lanes south. There was no traffic traveling on the north bound lanes. A van starts to crest the hill on the south bound side but is in the far right lane about 75-100 yards away. Speed limit is 25. I go to pull out and make my turn.

Then it happened. Some lady in a red sedan (could not get a description because I was too busy trying to react) comes flying through a stop sign off of a side street making a right-hand turn into the north bound lanes. She probably didn't have a clear line of sight to see me when she ran it, or she was just looking for oncoming traffic. She came around the turn and into the inner most lane, as she was driving too fast to stay on the right side. At this point I am broadside to her and she doesn't have time to stop or even slow down.... so i had a choice:

Option 1: continue on my current course/speed and get the back half of the bike nailed by a cager, possibly causing severe injury

or

Option 2: punch it.

I stuck with option 2, and rolled on the throttle. As I hit it, I feel the bike jump forward with that oh so familiar feeling of "go baby, go!" But then it happened... because it was cool and damp this morning my tires were not exactly "sticky" and the rear tire spun. Because I was already in the lean, the bike kicked out and went down with me on it. Down I went. Hit the ground and slid. Spun in circles with the bike from the momentum of the rear kicking out until it stopped. It was a low speed crash (between 15-20) so damage was minimal.

The considerate lady in the red sedan never stopped, slowed (that i saw) and bolted over the hill never looking back. The van that I saw pulled up and rolled down the window asking "are you ok?" I told her "yeah" and before I could say anything else she rolls out too. I pick up my baby and do a quick glance for damages... Scrape on the bar end and tip of the clutch lever, frame slider did its job although the impact bent an extension support for the frame slider, and a good scrape on the alternator cover. Everything else looked fine. I look around and don't see any cameras in the area on any of the buildings. So I get back on head to the conference law center.

Once I park i discovered that i hit hard enough to put a crack in my alternator cover and it is now.... leaking oil...

So thanks to miss late for work... I now get to donate the extra money I made working this conference to pay for the damages to my bike while I worked this conference. Hopefully I will have it up and running again in a few days...

Glad you are okay. The bike can always get fixed easier than you can. To bad in todays world no one stops to make sure that someone is not hurt. I'm talking about the first lady. Sheesh.

damn that is not cool.

You can be on all your P's and Q's and all it takes is one yin-yang to fock up you're day.

sorry that happened. I guess the lesson to all is to SCAN, IDENTIFY, DECIDE, EXECUTE or whatever the hell they teach...think i'm missing a P? How ironic?

What do you value more? Life or Image?

Glad you're ok!
If your bike is leaking, how badly? Can you ride it home?
