Crashed on Rt. 50 in W. Virginia - October 1, 2010, 09:17 PM

I just got back from a trip to Chicago. The ride out was uneventful, but as luck would have it, I wrecked out in West Virginia on Rt. 50 about 120 miles from home.

My friend and I met a rider traveling from Ohio to Baltimore. He decided to ride along with us. I took a corner a little too wide and hit some gravel. I dropped the bike on the left side to avoid running into the guard rail and over the cliff. My buddy was able to avoid hitting me, but rider #3 rode straight into the bike, wedging it under the guard rail and sending me about 4 feet down the road.

His bike put a nice hole in the bottom of my motor so I think it's a wrap. His bike is most likely totaled also. He was pretty banged up and I just found out he has a fractured collar bone.

I guess that's it for me riding this season. I'm just happy that I walked away from this. I'll post pics and the video when I get my camera back.

Steve

good to hear you walked away. what happened to the stranger, was he able to get a ride to baltimore?

this is my worst case scenario nightmare while riding >100 miles from home, crashing and not having a ride back home.

I spoke to the third guys wife. She just hit the road from Ohio. That's going to be a long ride.

I am thankful, it could have happened anywhere between VA and Il. Glad it was this close. I got a ride from some guys that work in Winchester, so my wife only had to drive to about two miles from The Duc Pond.

As for parts, unless some one has a spare 696 motor they don't need, it's a wrap lol. I'll ride the wife's Ninja until I buy another one next spring.

This is after I got pushed under the guardrail.

My brand new Ducati jacket. Too bad there's no bike to go with it now. lol

Yes, I have the whole thing on tape.

There goes the rest of the oil.

The other riders bike.

DUDE!!! Firstly, I am glad you're ok!
Second, DON"T LET THEM TOTAL IT!! Most likely the hole is in a cover of some sort on the motor. All the rest looks cosmetic. A coworker nearly had his bike totaled over a "cracked engine" (and other cosmetic damage). A $80 oil pan and a $9 gasket later it was back on the road. If you've got it at home, I'll come by and take a look. There's got to be a painter on .NET somewhere.
You, my friend, have a winter project!

Did the cops try and take your video camera? Hopefully you didn't let them get their grubby mits on the footage. Glad you're okay, was the other rider pissed about crashing? Like dude said I don't think I'd let insurance consider it totaled, does the front end look straight?

PS Now let's have that footage

I'm finally back in town for the second time this weekend . As for the video, the cops didn't take it or even ask to view it. No one was cited, and the cop even admitted that the road was pretty bad there.

The other rider wasn't pissed, but he kept apologizing for hitting my bike.

honestly, the frame looks perfect to me, but I might have been a little dazed at the time. I'm just wondering about the motor. If you look at the second to last picture, there is a huge chunk of metal missing from the area that holds the oil filter.

If it's repairable, I guess I will have a winter project. I'll be there Wednesday night and hopefully, I'll have the video back by then.

Don't sweat the bike. It's most important that you are okay. It looks to me like you could easily fix it too. I feel your pain though. I would be really sad if I screwed up my 696.
