It always amazes me how many people order beer at the gap and ride, sorta pisses me off that they do it and that the resort serves alcohol there during the day...

Ha living under a rock?
Those thin little skull caps are what many wear and they are NOT DOT approved. Some have fake DOT stickers but no one is fooled.
No foam in them at all is pretty obvious.

Meanwhile back under the rock, the industry has been manufacturing half helmets that meet or exceed DOT standard FMVSS 218 for years.

What you see as a novelty helmet may very well be DOT approved. Do I think they are the best choice for protection? No, but the DOT is quite possibly legit.

Can't really tell by that helmet but I have a half helmet that is in fact dot approved and it is like 2" thick.
Most harley guys do not wear that type, this is what they wear.

Wow, didn't know it was going to end in an argument but ok.
I've never heard any of my harley friends brag or care if their helmets were dot approved. Mostly they don't want to wear one at all. If a thin little novelty helmet has a fake dot sticker on it, and many do, they will wear it to try and get away with it.
If anyone thinks a thin, no foam, helmet is actually dot approved then they don't know anything about helmets.
A shell doesn't do anything for impact dispersion

You two are saying mostly the same thing.

Most of them wear those brain buckets however - the ones with no impact padding.

Of course they make DOT approved half helmets, but they are much thicker. If you looked at one vs the other there is no mistaking which one is which. One has some impact padding while the other does not. Its just the shell for the most part.

Couple of my best friends all have cruisers and they wear the non dot brain bucket ones. Terrible idea.

DOT half helmet

NON Dot half - clearly just regular old padding.

There is a noticeable and visual different between the two for sure. They don't like how big they look on their head. I'll add that half helmets with padding to look pretty funny.

Plus in the pics you keep posting I can't tell if those helmets have any foam in them at all.
Still my poke was at his statement about harley riders taking pride in dot helmets. Never heard of it, ever!
