Right around the corner from me. That intersection is getting worse and worse. People FLY through there now that it's been widened.

Well you can't charge the driver with a crime if there is no law for it. All the driver has to say is I think he must have been speeding and then there is the doubt. Yes it is stupid but a sad fact. They could try to charge him later but I doubt it.

Not to defend the driver but anytime a biker is getting close to an intersection with cars waiting to turn left you should always assume they do not see you. People are just not programmed to look for bikers.

Said the same thing about my ex.....

but for real,
you can get jail time for reckless. ask me how I know?

They call it an accident for a reason. He didn't do it on purpose. I'd hope he feels pretty terrible. Not saying he shouldn't get some jail time, just enough to set him straight. At 19, probably 10-15 days total. Lots of community service, probation, and having his licenses taken away for as long as the law allows.

Bet he was playing with his smartphone!

+1

Plus, it's hard for drivers to gauge the gap in distance as a bike approaches them because bikes are so much smaller than a car--because of the size difference, the bike may look farther away than it really is, so drivers tend to underestimate the space between them and the rider.

I obviously consciously look out for motorcycles, but even then, I occasionally have difficulty gauging how far away a motorcycle is and how quickly it's closing the gap as it approaches me from the other direction, especially at dusk and times of lower visibility.

Not defending the driver at all, but there are some elements beyond mere stupidity that make the left-turning car threat such a problem for motorcyclists.
