Fatal Crash at the Rt7 / Claiborne Pkwy interchange - August 18, 2007, 01:13 AM

Seems to have happened some time around 2:00am. A Loudoun deputy came upon a guy laying in the median or so it sounds and then determined it to be a motorcycle wreck. The rider was DOA.

From the sounds of it the wreck happened on northbound Claiborne at the ramp to westbound Rt7. I went by there around noon Saturday and didn't see any signs of anything happening. I'm thinking it may have been a drunk cruiser rider. There should be a press release on Monday.

I'm half right so far, it was cruiser rider. Must've been drunk to do what they describe, maybe that will come out later.

The second person in less than a week was killed on Loudoun's roads Saturday.

James Walter Reese, 31, was riding a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Claiborne Parkway when he lost control of his bike shortly before 2 a.m.

When the accident occurred, Reese, from Sterling, was at the Claiborne Parkway intersection with Rt. 7. He crossed the median and struck a guardrail. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the 13th fatality on Loudoun's roads this year.

I'm guessing there are more bikes on the roads overall this year, as well. More people are picking up motorcycles. Unfortunately, with so many new riders, there will be more accidents.

I did not see any readily apparent causes to the crash. The bike was pointed north and he was about 30' north of the bike. The ground was so hard that I couldn't see any tire tracks or skid marks to determine which way the bike had been going.

Either he was DUI and crashed.
Someone ran him off the road.
Or he had a medical emergency and crashed.

Given that he was just past the area where 7 Eastbound traffic merges to northbound Lansdowne Blvd, it is possible that he was run off the road. Being so late in the evening though there was very little traffic to have done so. Of course, he may have been coming up the ramp and lost it too, I don't know.

Very sad regardless.

Lt. Colonel Grossman - writes in his introduction to The Bulletproof Mind:

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: "Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident."....

"Then there are the wolves," the old war veteran said, "and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy." Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

"Then there are sheepdogs," he went on, "and I'm a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf."

Damn. Turns out his wife worked at my current company. They just had a kid within maybe the past year. I didn't make the connection until HR sent out an e-mail about it today. Very very sad.

R.I.P. Eric. You were truly like a younger brother to me. May you live on in all those you helped and reached out to help. You are truly missed!

tfinch: well, actually, if he did, that's fine cause it's in the pockets!
