I'm happy to say that my incident was minor but I learned a few things from it.

Back on July 25th I rode the Cornerspeed Grand Course in the advanced group. The first part of the day I was having an issue with the on-throttle response on my 05 R6. I only have a slip-on and what I noticed was the bike would not transition from off-throttle to on-throttle smoothly, the bike has done this since I bought it (only complaint about the R6 I have)

I was talking to another racer who also has an R6 and he had the same issue and recommended increasing the idle to help compensate. So I bumped the throttle up to 2500 which he warned me would reduce the amount of engine braking. Well, I went out with the idle turned up and the on-throttle issue was greatly reduced...however, it really changed the engine braking so I was trying to get used to that.

I followed Jim (WLKBLD) on a moderate to slow pace around VIR and coming into turn 3 we were holding a decent speed (nothing crazy) and the bike not having any engine braking threw off my timing when entering the turn because typically I just roll off the throttle a little and then hit turn 3. As I approached the turn I was leaned over and I didn't want to brake while leaned over so I stood the bike up and braked harder, here's where I made the mistake...instead of following through, I slowed up and figured I'd just run off and take the bike in to set the idle lower (keep in mind this was the second lap so I was still not adjusted to the higher idle)

Anyhow, I ran off doing maybe 15 to 20mph and my front caught a bump and it flicked me off the side. So my bike slides and I'm tumbling next to the bike...thinking to myself...here goes my first wreck!

Well, the bike wasn't bad at all, the gear shifter was bent but I was able to fix that and the rest of the bike was not even dirty! I was fine, I just tucked and tumbled so I was up immediately.

I was out next session and I adjusted the idle which got the bike just right. After the fall I was actually much more relaxed and I was able to pick up the pace a bit once I learned the South course a little better.

Lessons learned...take it easy when tuning the bike, try to make the turn instead of running off, and stay focused!

Funny thing is, the crash helped me relax but I made a really stupid mistake so I walk away learning from the experience!

Glad to see your learned from your experience. I'm sure you'll be tuning and experimenting with your bike more. I'm glad we have tracks to try different settings at.

No kidding...I wouldn't touch the bike on public roads...bike felt much different...no shame...it's part of the sport so I'm happy it happened on the track rather than on a road.

in order to learn and be better you have to fall. so as you said on the return you where more confident. but you must be more carefull now because when you get used to the falling you will end up like Max Biagi or add a screw in to your arms etc.... no need to worry take it easy and push the bike to the limits but safe.

I wouldn't say so much confident but I was a bit more relaxed...which allowed me to focus better. I'm taking it one step at a time...I only have about 6000 miles total riding so I'm not confident by any means...but I understand where you're coming from...I'd rather remain slow for several seasons and learn how to be fast rather than just go and ride fast and end up crashing and getting injured because I didn't understand the mechanics behind the techniques. I get yelled at by some of the instructors because I study the art of riding too much

Chris, I really admire your whole mindset towards getting good enough to eventually compete on a higher level. You've analyzed your mistake and recognized what you have to do to avoid repeating it...there's really nothing else to add.

at least you were able to stay tucked and allow yourself to tumble rather than get up, people can tell you and tell you but in your first crash its hard to just let your body go. glad your ok sounded like it probaly helped you ride faster later in the day

Glad you're okay mang...
I was just thinking a remap would probably be a better fix to the on throttle problem... My 750 had the same issue with nothing but a Yosh TRS slip on and a K&N filter. I got a remap and that took care of the poblem no sweat. I know it costs a little bit, but well worth it, AND you still get your engine braking...
