Angry Fucking Deer - November 6, 2012, 03:47 PM

Hit a deer on the way to work this morning. #2 for this VFR.

Coming up on a traffic light I was in the right lane about to pass a car that I figured was slowing early for the light which was red. As I got even with it I could then see a deer in front of the car and immediately got on the brakes. It was panicked and a split second later it was in front of me and there was nothing I could do. I hit it at about 35mph. I never saw it after that. I hope it died slowly of internal bleeding.

My foot was caught under the bike and it took a minute get out from under it. My overpants ripped through and ripped a couple small holes in my slacks. Just a nickel-size strawberry on my knee and my upper front size is going to one hell of a bruise since I landed on my wallet which was in my front pocket. My textile jacket has a few small rips in it too.

It seems like it mainly hit the wheel/fender area since there was no impact damage to the front fairing. Except for the fender all damage came from hitting the ground. I'm not sure how the left upper ear of the fairing broke.

Once I got the bike and pieces picked up it wouldn't start. The battery was worn down from having the heated grips on with the bike not running.

Neither the car that was next to me nor the one I had passed just up the road bothered to stop while I was stuck under my bike. After I had the bike up for a minute or so one vehicle did stop to see what was going on. I don't think they ever saw me on the ground. They said they would come back by once they got done voting in case I couldn't get going.

I was eventually able to bump start it and go to work. Later at work I found a single deer hair sticking to the back of my helmet.

Dayum, glad you came out ok though. It could have been worse but hitting a deer twice in one year must be some kind of record.

BAD BODY POSITIONING AND LACK OF EXPERIENCE!!! (standard .net response)

Now that that's out of the way...glad that was the extent of the damage. Those deer seem to purposefully freak out and freeze only when they are exactly in front of you. Either way, I'm also glad the deer made it out in one piece and hopefully unharmed as well. Not its fault that a road crosses its habitat.
