I Crashed Like A Noob - December 21, 2006, 07:37 PM

Coming home on the HOV here in D.C. tonight. All the cars in front of me jammed on the brakes. Guy in the lane to the right of me started to swerve like he was gonna come into my lane ... he didn't. But I was a knucklehead and over-reacted and grabbed a fistfull of front brake ...

Well, I stopped tumbling about 70 feet later. we were prolly going about 50 MPH. I got up and ran off the road. Nobody ran over me.

Car behind me missed me with about 15 feet to spare. As I was tumbling down the highway I could see him. I remember thinking, "he's gonna miss me, yeah he's gonna miss me" with each revolution of the tumbling when my eyes would rotate in that direction.

The first 7 cars or so behind me didn't even stop. Sheesh.

Bike's OK. Need a clutch lever, shifter, and foot peg. None of my camera stuff got tore up. Which I'm very happy about. Sliders on the frame and swingarm saved a LOT of damage. No dents to tank, frame etc. Just fairings and a case cover (non muffler side) ... which I'm not gonna replace.

Gear is great! My knees got a lil tore up cause I only had on nylon athletic pants over my uniform pants. Had J-R Ballistic jacket, back protector, and Cheapo $65 Feldsheer gloves. I burned through the gloves ... got a little rash on my thumb. I need an Aerostitch suit if I'm gonna keep crashin like this commuting every 2 years. Sigh. Right wrist is startin to hurt a 'lil, but I'm just sniveling.

(Thanks again this time, God ... I know you are lookin out for me and I'm doin my best down here for ya. Please keep makin those cars miss me when I fall off.)

The real question though is did you get it on video? j/k

Glad you made out as well as you did. Not sure I would say you "Crashed like a noob". Seems like most of the stories I hear like this are from riders that have been riding a while. Shit just happens when you commute on a bike.

Yeah. Was a bad day at work today and I was thinking about it and not focused .... just droning along. Then wham ... brake lights ... a car looking like it was coming at me ... hey, I'm tumbling ... I can't believe this is happening ... oh no, he's gonna run over me ... ah, no he isn't ... run, run ... quick get off the road ...

Do'h.

No video for this one. All you get is pix.
