I hate cars - barely avoided death - November 1, 2011, 06:42 PM

So I was headed down the GW parkway today at about 65 (yes, was over posted limit) when an element decides to pull out from a side street in front of me, turning into oncoming traffic. I was able to throw on the brakes, rear tire skid mark looks like I was locked for about 30' slowing down to about 30 mph. I missed the back end of the element by only a few feet (thank god she stepped on the gas and moved out of my way. As soon as I saw I had cleared it, I let off of the brake, but was already almost on the yellow line (road was turning) and my bike was at a 30degree angle from the skid, with me headed into on coming traffic. I barely dodged the car in the first closest lane to me and by this time the car in the other lane realized what was happening and came close to a stop. I was able to pull over to the shoulder and just set it down in the dirt because I was so relieved to have made it through alive.
The motorist who nearly killed me never looked back (I wish people were accountable, but they really aren't unless you hit them).

I can say after reading on here about practicing braking and actually going out and doing it probably saved me (even though I did still lock up the back which is less than ideal) but I feel really lucky and happy to have made it out alive.

Man, close one. Glad you made it through and yeah, shit pisses me off too. These MFers around here just think no harm, no foul if there is no contact.

I had the exact same incident the other day but less urgent. I flipped the dude off, and he pulled up along side me at the next light and told me I had a mental problem. I said, "You're damn right I have mental problem. It's you so get out of the car so I can fix it." Coward took off.

Speed limit on the Pkwy varies from 25 mph - 50 mph. So at BEST, you were 15 - 20 mph over the limit. According to you it's HER fault for pulling out in front of you without enough clearance? SHE is the one who almost killed you?

Don't get me wrong...definitely glad you made it out unscathed, but try and realize that you were at fault here too. Rush hour, 15-20 mph over, busy road...lot's of room for disaster.

Glad to hear you didn't hit anybody.

I had a moment with another rider today. He blew the turn coming from the opposite direction on his loud as fuck harley with ape hangers and almost ate the front of my work truck. I ran halfway off the road and it was still close.

speed limit or not pull outs and left turns are likely to turn a biker into roadkill all the same. Should he have not been speeding, of course not, but in the end when cagers do not pay attention we end hurt or dead.

Glad you are alright, Chris.

These posts are hilarious. Apparently no one on this board speeds, and if they do, they only do it at the track because it is safer.

I agree 100 percent. Im thinking moreso that it is hard enough for drivers to judge our closure rate as it is. It could very well be that she saw him, but didn't realize that he was 20mph over the limit. So she pulls out and suddenly he is about to ride up her ass. So she punches it and moves out of the way to compensate and increase the cushion.

Nah, but we tend to take the blame ourselves for near mishaps when speeding
