Just got hit by a car in a parking lot... - July 11, 2010, 12:49 PM

Well the KTM took another dive to the mat today.

After church, I stopped to get some lunch in an Aspen Hill shopping center and was on my way out. I rode back behind all the stores and was taking it real easy because the pavement was greasy from all the restaurants' grease back there. So I'm coming around a left corner out from behind the Giant grocery when I see this black car flying right at me from the left in reverse. I only had time to start my swerve and think, "Nope, I'm not gonna..." BAM!!! I felt the impact on my lower left leg and foot, bike falls to the right, I do a tuck and roll, come up on my feet and check to see if my left leg is broken. Nope, seems ok. Painful, but not serious.

Front brake lever gone, right bark buster busted, few other nicks and scratches, and that's about it. It appears there is NO damage on the impact side so I think it was my left leg that left the divot in the car's bumper and busted her tail light. It was weird riding home without a front brake, and I don't recommend it.

Most importantly, my chipotle burrito came through without even a scratch nom nom.

Photos. Divot in bumper is from my left foot, I'm pretty sure. The bump on my leg above my ankle is where I hit her tail light. There's no damage to the bike on that side at all.

That sucks man. I'm guessing they didn't drive off immediately after hitting you?

Once I determined my leg wasn't broke, I got ready to run after the car, had it started away. It was a 17-year-old girl on a learner's permit though, and she was out and apologizing. She called her mom, and her mom and a family friend came to the scene. I got all of their info and will try to work with them first before doing an insurance claim. All Central/South American, really nice ladies. They really looked after me, and I'm confident this will end well for all involved.

Fortunately, it was a low-speed thing, and the Nissan bumper collapsed just like it's supposed to. Otherwise my lower leg would be shattered for sure.

Photos attached up top. If the girl had been 18 or older, I would have taken her photo too. She's cute.

How do you beak the lever since it's protected all around and it doesn't look like that broke...

You do seem to find trouble riding in parking lots. hehe

She is 17 on a learners permit..I'm guessing that contributed to her NOT seeing him or looking behind her when she backs up
