For Culpeper, it is tragedy heaped upon tragedy.

Town policeman Roscoe Barnes, suffering from severe head injuries, was listed in critical condition last night after the motorcycle he was riding on the Sperryville Pike was struck by a car yesterday afternoon.

Barnes, a six-year veteran on the Culpeper force, was on the last vehicle in the funeral procession for 10-year-old Emily Nicole Woodward when, according to police, a car pulled out of Kelly Street and into his path.

Nicole Woodward, a sixth-grade student at Floyd T. Binns Middle School, was run over and killed by by a school bus Wednesday, on the first morning of classes.

At about 3 p.m. yesterday, Barnes, heading toward Fairview Cemetery, collided with the left side of a Chevrolet Camaro. The 44-year-old officer was thrown from his motorcycle to the other side of the car and landed on the pavement, according to police.

After receiving emergency treatment on the scene, Barnes was flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Surgery scheduled for last night could not be performed because of the severity of Barnes' injury, according to a Police Department statement.

Barnes is also suffering from other accident-related injuries, the statement said.

The name of the Camaro's driver has not been released.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.

Barnes had his motorcycle's emergency lights on at the time of the accident, according to police.

The speed limit on Sperryville Pike is 35 mph at the spot where the accident occurred

You always see people getting pissed off over a funeral procession. Some jackass wants to cut everyone off and doesn't care what it takes. Fuckin people have no respect these days. I mean really, how hard is it to sit at a fuckin light or a stop sign, show respect for some one who has passed away and wait for 5 damn min.??? Now of course I don't know the exact details of this incident but if I were to guess it's like I said. The fool got impatient and dipped out in front of the police officer. People suck sometimes.

I pray for the officer who was injured and hope he has a speedy recovery.

God Speed Jeff! You'll never be forgotten.

Yeah, when I see them they fly to the next intersection and not through! People are in too much of a hurry. Look friggin both ways! Even at a green light I still looked because I dont wanna get TBONED by some fugggin MORON who runs a red light..And it always the same excuse..."It was yellow when I went throug it!" BULLSH*T How can your light be yellow and mine green? Plus, It takes a little time for my light to turn green, me hit the gas and be in the intersection for you to FUGGIN HIT ME!!!

Yellow means slow and come to a stop cause your light is turning red....
