A 24-year-old Columbia man was killed this morning after his 2003 Yamaha R6 motorcycle hit a guardrail as he exited northbound Route 29 at Broken Land Parkway, Howard County police said today.

Police believe Michael Shinn was traveling at a high rate of speed on the Broken Land Parkway exit ramp when the accident occurred at 8:46 a.m. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m., police said. There were no other passengers.

RIP.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. I always feel like crap whenever I read these. I can only imagine what you all are going through.

I was told today by someone I respect and care about that I should slow down. She was saying that it does not matter if you are a good rider. If something unexpected comes up in the road, it does not matter how much experience you have or how fast you are. We all get hurt the same ways. I intend to take her suggestion seriously. If you don't know the road you are on or you are uncertain of the condition please slow down. I will do the same. Yes I do realize this is the pot calling the kettle black. So PM if you got something to say, and save the drama for your mama.

what's scary is that he lived in that area... we can never be too comfortable out there, anywhere

Pot calling the kettle black or not, you're right.... we all get hurt the same ways no matter how experienced or fast we are. ride safe.

RIP. It seems the guard rails are the big issue. How does one go about getting them changed?

Crap....I just took that turn one week ago on the way to Merriweather. These posts are becoming too common.

ALL MY HEROES ARE RUSSIAN...GO CAPS!

Well you see, Norm, itís like thisÖA herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.-Cliff Claven
