RSV4 - Totalled - November 26, 2010, 09:21 PM

I’ve been waiting a while for things to basically be settled before posting anything here publicly. I got hit by a minivan while on the way to work. Rather than waiting to merge with the rest of the traffic he was with, he jumped across three directly into my path which was otherwise completely clear. Upon doing so I guess he then realized some motorcycle was ‘tailgating’ him, so he slammed on the brakes. I swerved to the left onto a paved shoulder. Just as I was about to look over at the driver to see what he was up to, he swerved into me, taking me out. He didn’t stop either.

He impacted my muffler and I got launched off the left side, landing hip first on a paved shoulder before tumbling into the grass/gravel shoulder that followed. It was my most violent crash yet. My 90mph get offs were a piece of cake compared to this. I full on tumbled for at least 50ft. I need to go back and measure. As I was tumbling I was imagining my bike was doing the same and would be in a thousand pieces. Miraculously it stayed on the left side, never flipping. The only damage to the right side is the dented muffler.

The first thing I noticed as I came to rest was the sound of a 4-banger flooring it. I was hoping that was someone chasing him down. So out came the scanner and I listened for FD and PD to arrive. I then heard the dispatcher saying that someone had stopped and was holding the driver of the vehicle that hit me, ½ mile down the road or so. Another guy that saw it stopped by me and helped my pick up the bike. I could barely stand because it felt like my ankle was busted. He stuck around a gave a statement to the PD. FCPD by the way was very friendly and professional about everything. However, charging the guy with just improper/erratic lane change is a load of crap.

The amberlamps came and checked me out. They asked all the usual easy to answer who/where are you questions, no hard ones like ‘where are you pitted?’ They bandaged my leg while I gave an account of what I could remember at the time to a cop.

My stepdad came and picked up, took me home to change and get my truck/trailer and we went back and got the bike. Then I went to the hosptial. All sorts of scans and x-rays, and IV morphine which really didn’t do a damn thing. Nothing broken though. I may have bruised my liver, my blood chemistry was all out of wack. I had to go back to the ER a few days later after becoming really ill, puking, sweating like crazy while sleeping and fevered feeling. Got some head scans then to check for swelling and I didn’t actually have a fever. The doc/nurses weren’t sure how to explain it. I laid off the percocets and changed antibiotics and started feeling better.

My entire left hip area still has visible bruising. The surface is numb. When I stand after sitting or laying down for a while, I get a burning pain in the side of my hip. Same thing while rolling over while sleeping. My foot/ankle still hurts with any rolling or pointing toes down type movement.

I dropped off the bike at RNR last weekend for the official estimate. I had already gotten prices for everything that was obviously damaged – frame $3k, muffler $1400, swingarm $1500 , gas tank $770 etc. Added up to over $11k. I finally heard from the adjuster today. They valued it at $13900 which isn’t too bad. But best of all I get to buy it back for only about $3500. This one can be for race only and I’ll get another for the street.

I’m still owed for a helmet and some pants. It was an old helmet too, so no real loss there. Amazingly my jacket only had some very minor scuffing around the waist. I don’t how I managed only that. I prefered to keep the jacktet rather than turn it over for a little money. They also owe me for med bills and pain/suffering. That ought to pay for the Bazzaz units on each bike and maybe a race ECU for the race bike.

Sorry to hear man, that was one sick bike, glad you are okay though

Edit: After reading the whole thing, it sounds like you got pretty lucky with your whole experience, cops, insurance, damage, gear damage, etc. I know it could have been A LOT worse!!

Congrats on coming out of it relatively intact. The random chills, vomiting, etc sounds like a latent internal injury.

As for the bike, meh - replaceable. But I'm surprised at the amount of damage for a bike that didn't tumble. Frame, swingarm, etc. all toast.

How the guy only got charged with improper lane change and not leaving the scene of an accident is ridiculous - especially after he brake checked you seconds before running you off the road.

What kind of gear did you have on that day? Shoei helmet and ....

There's a story behind that.

That, an AGV jacket that really isn't as sturdy as the old AGV jacket I have, some slacks and Oxstar riding shoe/half boot things. I was wearing the same jacket when I hit a deer a few years ago.

Yeah, thanks. I'm good to go. Not looking forward to the drive out to McHenry, MD though.

Jacket is bad luck. Time to pour the blood of a virgin on it, put it on an alter, circle it in cocaine, and set it on fire to appease the Gods.

Holy crap, Travis!!! I'm glad you're "ok!"
a) I had to check your profile to make sure this was you - you people need to quit changing your names (although this one really fits you)
b) Amberlamps and "Where are you pitted" question also made me giggle
c) I'm really glad you're ok!!
Like Stillie said, if you need anything, let us know!

Holy Shit Trav!!!! Glad you are alright man! So what is the story with the drive. Considering his "erratic lane change" caused your accident, is he footing the bill?

His insurance is paying for everything. It's 320mile round trip drive to go to the Aprilia shop to get a new one.

glad you are void of serious prolonged injury. I experienced that burning sensation with my bruising from my accident as well. Decades of skateboarding crashes and I never experienced that before. it freaked me out a bit.
