VSP crashes while chasing bike - September 3, 2010, 05:26 PM

About half an hour ago in Stafford Co. A citizen used the trooper's radio to call in the wreck. The bike was found abandoned and K9 is starting a track. Other troopers are trying to get access to the dashboard cam.

I was on my way to work and the biker blew past me (oncomming) well over 100mph on brent town road. about 10 seconds later I came up to a few cars backed up and a state cop car in the ditch... What appeared to happen was the VSP car was chasing the guy (idiot) and lost control in a curve hit a tree (that fell into the road) then rolled the car atleast one and spun back into the ditch...

In my opinion the police have no buisness chasing someone on that road at over 100mph. If you want to radio ahead or whatever more power to ya. He put several peoples lives in danger by driving like that on that road. No simpathy for him. (he was fine when I got to the scene.)

As far as the biker, wonder why he ditched the bike..

For anyone wondering, this was on the road that runs right next to quantico from fleetwood and turns into garrisonville rd (610) eventually.

Obviously you shouldn't run, but if the officers choose to pursue they have to be willing to assume the risk involved ...including endangering the lives of everyone else they're risking by driving their 2 ton cruiser at those speeds. (The force of a 4000+lb vehicle is exponentially greater than that of a ~600lb bike+rider... Obviously) That's why a few states mandate "no chase" policies - it's simply not worth the risk involved.

Va. state trooper injured chasing after motorcycle
BY ALEXANDRA BOGDANOVIC
Times-Democrat Staff Writer

State Trooper Chris Carson emerged from a Friday afternoon crash with only minor injuries. First Sgt. Jeff Lail, in charge of the Area 12 Office in Warrenton, said the crash happened on Brent Town Road near the Stafford County line around 5:40 p.m. Carson was trying to catch up with a motorcyclist who was allegedlyspeeding and driving erratically, but the trooper never actually advised dispatchers he was involved in a pursuit, Lail said. A pack of cars pulled as far off the road as they could to get out of the trooperís way. Carson tried to get around the group, but couldnít complete the maneuver due to traffic coming in the opposite direction, Lail said. Carsonís cruiser never crossed the center line, the first sergeant stressed. Somehow, the back end of the trooperís vehicle went off the right side of the road. The cruiser then went back across both lanes and it a ditch bank and a tree, Lail said. Carson was transported to Fauquier hospital where he was treated and released.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Charlie Crummett conducted the investigation into Carsonís involvement in the crash. Crummett was unavailable Tuesday afternoon to say how fast Carson was going or why he was not charged in connection with the incident.

The motorcyclist continued for about two miles when he lost control of the bike for an unknown reason and hit a VDOT sign, Lail said. The driver allegedly fled the scene on foot.

Fauquier County deputies came to the scene to help look for the motorcyclist, Lail said. They apprehended him at an area residence.

The driver, identified as Joshua Payne, 32, was also transported to the hospital for evaluation of his injuries, Lail said.

Troopers charged him with numerous violations including reckless driving/failure to maintain control; driving without insurance; no state inspection; driving without a motorcycle endorsement on his license; and improper registration.

Additional charges are pending.
