Exclamation Warning: Gum Springs Rd - August 14, 2008, 12:03 PM

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up; on Gum Springs Rd between 50 and 234 (Sudley) there some nasty surprise patches of gravel when coming out of turns. Most of them on the Manassas bound side, but there's a few going toward Chantilly. The majority of them are around the x-mas tree farm where the new asphalt has been laid down.

Damn... I use that road a lot now that its been repaved. Oh well, you cant expect it to stay nice when there are more dump trucks on it than there are cars.

It looks like it was cleaned up a little today by cars, but the real bad spot is right past the x-mas tree farm, there's a 40MPH sign at a decent curve. Its a good sized pile right in the middle of the lane about 3ft long.

I think the gravel comes from the "shoulder" they put down. Basically packed gravel. The new blacktop is great, but watch it.

I take Gum Springs when I ride into work and today I watched the truck in front of me hit the shoulder and presto there was gravel in the road. Also it appears that in front of the quarry there is gravel and dust from the trucks rolling out. Today the gravel wasn't bad but there was a great trail of red clay dots that were mid-way down Gum Springs all the way down 234 as you cross over 29. Traffic then picked up so I stopped looking at that point.

I live off of Gum Spring. Be careful for cops as well. They've been hiding out here more often.

Yup. Craig took his new SV650S out on his first group ride about 5 years ago and boom...dumped it in front of the gravel pit when he came around the corner. Its a re-occuring problem on Gum Spring Rd between Rt 50 and Rt 234. and probably will be there for years!
