Bridge Day 2008 - Oct 18th - October 6, 2008, 01:15 PM

What: Weekend ride to New River Gorge Bridge in WVA. This is the longest steel-arch bridge in the world. It's also where - once per year - BASE jumpers jump from the bridge The govt closes down the bridge and it's like a little country fair... with people jumping off the bridge.

Equally important, the area is mountainous and sparsely populated. IE: there's some crazy twisty roads out there.

When: The weekend of 10/18. We will meet at Sheetz and either A) depart promptly at 5am on Saturday, or B) Friday afternoon to make up some ground.

Route: The route is yet to be determined and will be flexible. It will be all backroads, no highways. The general idea will be to hit 250,39,150,check out the bridge, and then start heading north and east towards home.

Pace: This will be a 'sport touring' ride. Some parts will be slow, other parts will be fast. We will wait up for everyone at intersections and no one will get lost. It will be a bit of a rush to get there (the jumping *ends* at 12 noon). But in the afternoon, we will have plenty of stops to stretch our legs, eat, and take photos.

If you haven't read THE PACE please do so. Let me add two more things: 1) When riding in formation, don't ride up on the person in front of you. 2) Don't pass other people within their lane on their right.

This is all weather dependent... but... Who wants to go?

I'm guessing you have to be a certified B.A.S.E jumper.

How do you restrict a group ride's number of bikes when it's being done on public roads? Do you ignore the other bikes as if they aren't there?

I'd be interested in Friday for an overnighter. Maybe a quick Wild Hogs type event - camping and riding

Sat. @ 5 am. Too early - NOT IN!

I have my kids that wknd and am thinking we would drive down Friday evening to camp and take in the chaos on the bridge. Wonder if any campgrounds have vacancies -- would you be riding down? With your wife?

Definatly only interested in riding down. No Nancy Pom Poms - she works on Saturdays. I'd be interested in riding down on Friday and camping - the rest of Witolds plan sounds ideal. Just no way would i'd be up for a cold "zero dark 30 reveille" and a 5 hrs. commute.
