Bridge Day 2009 / Foliage Ride - Oct 17th - October 9, 2009, 04:17 PM

What: Weekend ride to New River Gorge Bridge in WVA. This is the longest steel-arch bridge in the world. It's also where - once per year - BASE jumpers jump from the bridge The govt closes down the bridge and it's like a little country fair... with people jumping off the bridge.

Equally important, the area is mountainous and sparsely populated. IE: there's some crazy twisty roads out there.

When: The weekend of 10/17. We will meet at Sheetz and either A) depart promptly at 5am on Saturday, or B) Friday afternoon to make up some ground. PLEASE POST PREFERENCE OF A) OR B).

Route: The route is yet to be determined and will be flexible. It will be all backroads, no highways. The general idea will be to hit 250,39,150,check out the bridge, and then start heading north and east towards home.

Pace: This will be a 'sport touring' ride. Some parts will be slow, other parts will be a little faster. We will wait up for everyone at intersections and no one will get lost. It will be a bit of a rush to get there (the jumping *ends* at 12 noon). But in the afternoon, we will have plenty of stops to stretch our legs, eat, and take photos.

If you haven't read THE PACE please do so. Let me add two more things: 1) When riding in formation, don't ride up on the person in front of you. 2) Don't pass other people within their lane.

This is all weather dependent... but... Who wants to go?

Potentially in. I'll firm up the week of. I'd rather attempt to do it all in one day.

My bro and I have wanted to go to this for a while now...but he doesn't ride and I can't justify driving 5 hours one way to see it. It would be cool though.

Well my friend, you're just going to have to ditch your bro and join this ride.

Sounds like a good time, may have my brother come along as well.. which give us a pack mule (harley road king).

I would prefer option A. 5am is fine with me.

I would say 7pm-ish is what I shoot for... right before dark... It could be a little earlier. If in the afternoon we decided to drag our feet and make a lot of stops it could be later. (That said, there are some shortcuts and highways if it becomes problematic for you....)

Hey buddy, after some of the epic rides we have done together, I can't freakin' believe we haven't ridden together even once this year. Sort of my fault as I have ridden very little.

In terms of pace, we will be going about 15-20ish over in the straights, and and around 50ish through typical 35mph turns.

Also, absolutely no people who don't wear their gear. Full face helmet, jacket, gloves, boots - AT MINIMUM.

I'm out, unfortunately. I hope you get some takers because it'll be a good ride. PM coming.
