My First Long Ride [updated with pics!] - June 13, 2006, 10:02 AM

Ok so on friday i will be meeting my brother and riding out to meet my father and mother (everyone on bikes). This will be my first long ride. I'm super excited because it will also be the first time that my brother, dad and me will all be riding together (one of my dad's dreams).

Anyway below are the directions that I will be taking. If you have any suggestions on places to see or places to stop let me know.

Also how bad will 66 be friday around 3.15? Any better way?

I-66 to Waynesboro?? I'm confused right away.

But you really can't go wrong anywhere down in western Virginia. Goshen, Craigsville. Douthat State Park is really nice for riding if you can get over there (629 South off of 39). 220 is great through Covington.

For some reason I can't understand the directions though. I don't see 780 off of 39.

You live in Waynesboro?

Do yourselves a favor, skip 220 and go to 629 south through the park. Then you can catch 64 again.

You just suck! The south west corner of VA rocks. There are many great roads that cross the valley and through the mountains. Great views from the tops, cool scenery in the valley. I could spend a a week riding down there. Have a great trip. My only advice is to get a map and stay off the highway, its boring.

Thumbs up June 19, 2006, 01:38 PM

Update

Ok so my first big trip went on without a hitch! Absolutely no problems and great weather.

My trip began a bit rough. So I got off work later then I wanted to and was stuck in 66 traffic forever. That sucked, but once I got thru that it was clear highway. I made it down to the hotel about an hour before the rest of my family so I went looking for the closest watering hole. Found one and got down to business. Everyone showed up and we had a beer...or twelve.

Then it was off to bed for a good night’s rest to start Saturday off early.

Saturday Morning the troops were assembled.

We took off Saturday down Rt. 39 to Goshen Pass. Goshen was cool; we rode up and down it and stopped for a nice view.

On our way to the first covered bridge “Humpback Bridge” we got lost and went 18 miles down this damn dirt road.

It was way worse then how this looks...

We stopped at some point in the park to have break and figure out how we get to these covered bridges.

We finally arrived at our first covered bridge. I wasn’t sure if they even existed and my dad was just pulling all of our legs, but alas they do exist and are actually cooler then I imagined.

After seeing the first covered bridge we all suited back up and headed down 60 west, 159 south, 311 south (awesome road), and 42 south till we came to “Sinking Creek Bridge” the 2nd of 4 covered bridge we were to see. By the way 311 and 42 are great roads with a bunch of twisties all over the place.

After a quick stint on 601 and 460 east we arrived at the hotel. We again had to scout out a place to crave our barely pop addiction. Luckily there was a place right down the road that served tired riders.

We had a blast at dinner and then retired for the night.

Sunday came and my brother and I set out early to check out the remaining two covered bridges.

This is where we encountered the best damn road this side of [insert cool place here] Route 8. We jumped on 8 right near Christiansburg and rode it all the way to the final two covered bridges. 8 was nothing but twisties after twisity up and down this mountain. After scaring the hell out of me on a couple turns and watching my brother drag knees around a couple more turns we arrived at the 3rd covered bridge “Bob White”.

The last bridge was under construction...

The last covered bridge was only about half a mile from the Bob White one so we scooted down the road…but not before being molested by Black Ass Kenny and his side kick Ol’ Whitey. These two dogs barked like hell at us and then after about 5 min of that decided to come and play with us. They were jumping all up on us, then they decided to jump in the river and we knew we had to get out of dodge before they came back up all wet and nasty, so we fired up the bikes and headed back to 8!!

We met up with Mom and Pops and began the ride home. We went out to Charlottesville where we would split up and go our separate ways. In Charlottesville we came to this fried chicken spot my mom found and it was just what we need to fuel back up and make the last stretch home. We ate and said our good byes.

I took 29 to 15 to 4100 home and it didn’t take long at all. About half way home I met up with some dude on a blue 636 that was really cool. We stuck together for about 30 miles and then to split off.

I made it home just in time to grab a barley pop out of the fridge, pop the cover on the bike and sit down on the couch before the three days of riding hard hit me.

It was a really fun trip if you guys ever get a chance to go down there take it, there are tons of good roads all over the place!

Jason, that's awesome! I'm surprised you don't have a major case of ass-ritis, though. Thanks for the story and pics! Your brother looks just like you, that's funny. See you on Thursday.
