Rolling Thunder - April 28, 2009, 01:47 PM

So I'm going to do Rolling Thunder again this year. Last year I went with the gf's dad straight down to DC and we joined into the ride at the tail end of it.

This year he wants to go down to Battley Cycles and ride up from there. He rides a Harley, i obviously do not..sooooo I would like to have some sportbike guys come down and meet up with us as well so I'm not the only sportbike rider there.

any takers?

I did that two years ago with a friend who had a sportbike- met up there in MD and rode to DC. Then later did the whole line up thing at the Pentagon and back to DC. Good times and glad you're doing it!

yeh it was amazing seeing all those bikes, blocked off streets through downtwon dc just for us, and of course the symbolic nature of the ride...
im thinking of squiding it up this year with just a t-shirt and no jacket though. never ridden without a jacket, except in my neighberhood in 2006 when i got my first bike...it was way to hot last year, and the pace through dc was so slow that i roasted..literally roasted. we'll see though, i thought about going no jacket today to school, 5 min away on 495, but after 10 minutes of solid self deliberation i chose to gear up and suck it up.

I was thinking about doing it this year as well. I did it two years ago with my Dad who has a Harley. It was amazing, all those bikes, the special treatment you get, and how much people admire you just for riding in it.
As far as going as a squid...I can see your point, and it is all police escorted down to DC, the only thing I would be worried about is coming back you're on your own. But hey, many people ride with just a t-shirt and shorts on sport bikes. Had a guy in one of my classes today with a CBR1000RR ride in with a beater.

Guys,

Go to Patriot H-D and do the Ride of the Patriots (ROTP) from there up to Rolling Thunder ...

ROTP is really kewl. Last year they had a parade and several good guest speakers.

This is my personal favorite video that I have ever made:

http://www.magicratvideos.com/magicv...oTP_Short.html

I'm still ironing out details to see if I will be able to go this year. If I can, I will be doing ROTP again up to the Pentagon ... then Rolling Thunder.

The ROTP website with details is here:

Hooah!

Sounds like a collection of "Rightwing Extremists" to me.

Gun owners, military veterans, and some percentage that are pro-life sounds like a Homeland Security nightmare to me.

im a gun owner and a vet and i dont consider myself as any kind of extremist. i didnt realize that owning a gun or serving for your country made you a rightwing extremist but i guess everyone's entitled to their own views...thanks to those "rightwing extremists"

Yea, because all of us military veterans are "right-wing extremists"..

Unfortunately you are right about one thing, most of the people there will be military or former military, even though the entire nation is indebted to their sacrifice.

I'm not a right wing extremist or a gun owner, but I AM a proud patriot and will ride to support the members of our military who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so I can be free.

You can relax - it's nothing like that really. The origins of the Rolling Thunder rally is actually a memorial ride, intended to bring the government's attention to (or keep the government's attention on, as it were) the lingering issue of all the unaccounted-for Viet Nam POW's and MIA's.

Since its first run in 1988 it's kind of grown and morphed over the decades into a huge-ass motorcycle rally; with attendent parties, vendors, internal club politics and bickering. While POW's/MIA's are still supposed to be the central point of the rally, so many years have passed since the Viet Nam war ended that now it's just as much if not more an observance of a) the Viet Nam War and b) Memorial Day. I've attended many times in the past but won't be doing so any more. It's grown too big and unfocused IMO - and I want to emphasize that's just my opinion.

The ride itself is usually very well organized, with no security or safety issues to speak of. Some years, the estimated number of bikes in attendance has been over 300,000. If you do go, I'd highly recommend bringing lots of water with you because you'll be spending a lot of time (seriously, hours) in the Pentagon parking lot waiting - it can get pretty hot there.

Edited to add: here's a link to some info if anyone's innarested:
