I've done 1000 in 29 hours on a Mille and it was tough. 1000 miles on those roads in 24 hours, sick.

What happens with the $10,000 they make off of this event? Charity? Was setting up a 1000 mile route that difficult that it warrants a 10 grand profit for the organizers?

Edit: "Fee includes printed route booklet, downloadable map for GPS, continental breakfast Saturday morning, brunch on Sunday and a shirt. "

Ok, so how about the other $9,500??

I do a lot of motorcycle touring but doing an Iron Butt has never really appealed to me. The most miles I've ridden in one day so far is 789 miles, from Evansville IN to Annapolis, on the last day of a cross-country trip. The weather sucked and I just wanted to get home.

No diss to Iron Butt riders - I've met & talked with a few, they're great people with great stories and it seems to be quite addicting. But if anything, I'd like to take more time to explore all the great little-known roads in the U.S. and Canada. I guess I'm in the riding category that Iron-Butt types call "Flower Sniffin'". I myself call it FUGAWI riding.

Precisely. Absolutely no GPS allowed; you can carry a map but it has to stay in the saddlebag or tankbag until you're hopelessly lost in the middle of nowhere on some dirt & gravel road. Then you pull the group over, grab the map and say "Okay, where the FUGAWI?"

It's kinda an art form among my 'regular' group - we even got FUGAWI patches made up as an award for new ride leaders after they successfully gotten everyone lost. We find the best roads that way.
