Bar Recon, mission Rock & Roll Hotel 9/9/06 - September 9, 2006, 03:33 PM

I'm planning on checking out Rock and Roll Hotel at 13th & H St NE tonight around 8 p.m. Not planning to stay long as I'm planning on doing the 9/11 Ride tomorrow (and I had a little to much "evening" last night.) So it really is reconnaissance just for future referrence in my endless search for interesting watering holes. I plan to be back home no later than midnight if not earlier.

For any interested, they are hosting a "Free" party tonight which probably only means that they are not charging admission. I know that a few in this forum have been by the place already, I've only done a "drive-by" on the bike to note it's location...pretty much "in the hood", I have no idea how secure a bike will be ESPECIALLY if it is not parked on "H" St.

I'll check this thread up until 7 p.m. tonight, if anyone wants to check the place out too.

Rock 'n Roll Hotel has serious potential if you don't mind rolling through da 'hood to get there (12 blocks East of Chinatown.) Eclectic but fun bunch of bars there. Reminds me of the old 15 Minutes Club..or Insect Club without ALL the decor. Rock 'n Roll is much larger than it appears from the outside and NOT a hotel, decor is still evolving (used to be a funeral home)...but they have a bunch of metal, winged guitars suspended from the ceiling and a couple "suites" that can be reserved for parties. In any event, turns out I know two bartendresses there, one of which remembers me from the Crow Bar days and they would be more than happy to have a motorcycle crowd collect there. Parking seems safe enough on the main street, didn't check out surrounding streets. Upstairs bar is open at 7 most days and weekends, the concert/dj hall is open when a show is scheduled, they plan to serve food sometime in the next month...right now it's just chips, staff is an tatooed and pierced mix of friendly folks.

Also checked out The Red and The Black, a N'awlins themed joint, decent bar, has a small fenced patio in the back and an small upstairs bar where they have live bands.

Both places are raw and cater to alt rock/indie bands that don't have the draw to fill larger venues, Rock 'n Roll hotel is developing a recording studio in the back for musicians to cut discs at some point.

There's another place next to "Red and The Black" called The Palace of Wonders...a novelty bar that apparently features numerous images/stuffed /preserved specimens of all sorts of oddities that you would see in a Carnival....they charge a cover. I didn't happen to go in at this time.
