4/26/09: West Virginia, 520 miles, 12 hours - April 27, 2009, 12:41 PM

Toadmeister00, Blue-R, Vega, Macdad, Sara, OSD

Vega, Sara, and I meet at 8 a.m. in Urbana, Maryland, took 15 down to Haymarket to meet Todd and Vic, went to Winchester to meet Dave, then it was West Virginia time. Twisties weren't bad, but there is still a lot of lingering signs of winter left on the mountain roads. 33 was fairly clean except for an oil spill on the Virginia side. The center and side lines are pretty much gone over on the West Virginia side.

No incidents, no "conferences" with LE, just good hard riding and some playing here and there. We saw a snapping turtle lumbering across the road out near 33, Sara almost got hit by a turkey buzzard further up north on the same road, Dragula-style, I almost ran over a pretty good size black snake that fortunately decided to turn back toward the side of the road it wandered out from.

I got home around 8:30 or so and had just over 520 miles on the trip odometer. Finally took care of the last little chicken strips on my tires I put on last fall, just in time to replace them next week (I hate to replace a tire that still has chicken strips on it because I feel like I failed somehow).

55 saves lives and gas. That's why it took 12 hours.

lol, it's good to hear you guys/gal had a good ride! 522 in a day is pretty darn good! If you guys truly are taking a nice lightly spirited ride again anytime soon, I would love to put on a few miles with you all! Going fast is fun, but enjoying whats around you is also enjoyable. We all should slow down to smell the roses once in a while!

Todd may have something but I can't say for sure. I didn't take a camera this time. Kinda wish I had though, even though it's not very green out there yet.

Forgot to add that old 55 is tar and chip (as Space and both have reported previously) for a good stretch through the best section, but it's certainly passable. It's still a great way to connect to points west, especially for us Maryland peeps, though I think it will never be again like it used to be.

Great ride! Was a little sore waking up this morning, but it was WORTH it. And yeah, what was up with that huge bird?! there were plenty of small suicidal animals running around - don't know why it picked me to divebomb.

Damn...520 in a single day. That's like riding half way to Miami! By the end of the day today you could have been in South Beach sippin' margaritas!
