Close Call Sunday Afternoon...Frederick - April 27, 2009, 08:31 AM

Went for a ride with my buddy and his girlfriend this Sunday... rode out and over Catoctin Mountain... having a great time...

I was on the GSXR-600, my buddy was riding his KTM690 SMC, and his girlfriend was riding her new Buell.. just a chill, fun, semi-fast ride through the country.. no drama..

When we were heading back home, we had just got off of Highway 15 onto Route 26..right near the stoplight by Wal-Mart.. we were in the middle lane of the three... I was right behind my buddy when.. wham!!. his rear wheel locks up and smokes out... I had to quickly swing around him to avoid hitting him... his bike comes to a complete stop in traffic!!... not fun.. luckily nobody hit him...

I park up the street off of Route 26 and run back and help him get the bike off the street.. we had to pick up the rear to get it to move...

Finally, safe in the parking lot next to Route 26 we figure out what must have happened... his tranny locked up... something must have let go in his tranny.. I am thinking a shift fork or something and it jammed the tranny.... brand new KTM, less than 1000 miles... sounds like a serious warranty problem to me...

We end up having him ride his girlfriend's Buell home to get his truck and trailer to bring his bike home.. so the day ended up ok.. nobody got hurt..

If this would have happened on Highway 15, just two minutes earlier.. I shudder to think how this would have turned out...

Be careful out there peeps... you never know when something like this is gonna happen.. luckily this ended ok... always watch out for the unexpected.. stuff can break on brand new bikes just as easily as an old worn out POS....

Later...

Crazy! Glad to hear your friend was able to ride it out. A locked rear tire can be devastating if you don't know how to handle it and even worse if your hitting the apex of your turn.

Glad to hear it all worked out!

Yeah.. same idea as what happened to Goose there, but since it was a KTM.. it was easier to slide sideways...big bonus points to my friend for keeping it upright and not pooping himself in the process... he stayed really calm through it all...
