D-bag wouldn't let me merge! - February 27, 2011, 04:38 PM

So for the first time since I got my bike I had to use the power of her in a defensive manner. I just got off of 95 and was merging onto another highway. As I get off of the loop that puts you into the merging lane onto the highway I was already up to highway speed, in order to make a seamless merge into traffic. As I am side to side with traffic I notice that there are 3 cars to my left, in the right of the 2 highway lanes, and I am about even with the 2nd of the 3 cars. I speed up to merge in front of this car since there's a reasonable gap between him and the car in front. As I do this I make eye contact with him to make sure he sees me, and when I do so he looks at me and accelerates to not let me in. The car behind him follows suit and now I'm stuck in a situation where either I gun it to get in front of him anyway, or I jam on the brakes to get off on the upcoming exit, since I was in the merge/exit lane. At this point I assume there was someone behind me getting off at this exit, so I gun it in front of the guy that was trying to block me off.
I successfully get in front of him, but I had just put myself in a situation where I was in the middle of a group of tightly packed cars, and now a guy in the left lane is (unsuccessfully) trying to merge over to get off of the exit that we are passing. So I end up lane splitting the 2 cars in front of me, and getting the F*** out of Dodge.
It wasn't a REAL close call, but it could have been if I didn't have those ponies on standby, waiting on the twist of the throttle.

ppl are D-Bags. I always move over to the left lane to let ppl merge in smoother and safer.

OK done with my rant.

Me and my mending left wrist disagree. Just leave the ego in your garage/with your bike's cover when you ride. Just like haters gonna hate, douchebag drivers gonna douche and kill you. Being right won't matter when you're dead.

Chill, be defensive, expect asshattery from drivers, let them be asshats, smile knowing you're infinitely more cool than them.

I know what you're saying, but merging onto traffic you should be going a lot faster than traffic, it makes it a lot easier to merge....

Also when you're merging I don't think you should really worry about making eye contact first just make sure you're going to able to get ahead of the car without problems and do so without hesitating. I try to make eye contact when they are getting ready to turn left and I'm going straight....which has saved my ass a ton of times.

Ya I agree that you should be going faster than traffic to merge in. I was doing that, but the guy tried to block me from getting in.

I hate it when people are merging in going 40mph.

Yeah, nothing more irritating than someone who SPEEDS up when they see you coming over.

It's shit like that, the pure asshattery, that makes me want to commit mass murder.

Need to be more concerned with those merging off. You can always adjust speed accordingly while merging in. Things get a little hairy when the driver next to you suddenly realizes they are abt to miss their exit and need to come on over. I make it a habit to not be directly next to anyone while passing an exit. If your in the number 1 lane of course its not an issue. Definitely dont want to be next to someone in the number 2 or 3 lane though.

This is exactly why I am selective for when I use my signals.

I am also sure to give a "thanks" wave when someone lets me merge into their lane. I have to be nice to the 1 or 2 drivers on the road who aren't jerks.

I see where you're coming from too, and I hate panzy mergers. The problem you have to avoid is speeding. If there is an incident where you crash and a driver reports that you were speeding in the merge lane, you're screwed no matter who hit you. The other thing is if you happen to be paced or clocked while speeding in a merge lane, merging won't be an excuse, especially in VA.

The burden of entering a roadway safely on a yield rests entirely on the yielding motorist. Motorists already on the roadway are technically not obligated to do a damn thing to make it possible for you to enter. Just be careful out there, trust no one, and assume the worst. Then hopefully you can walk away from all your accidents, even if you're heading to the hospital.

Are you just getting on the road for the first time... ever? lol

I don't get what's so important about keeping "their place" on the road... and the other thing that gets me is people who like to hang half their car into the merging lane to keep people from getting ahead of them. Like, what the hell. People become so unreasonable behind the wheel of a car.
