Just got back from Key West - March 26, 2008, 10:39 AM

My girlfriends aunt and uncle rent a house down in Key West every year for the entire month of March. We got invited to go down, and I thought what better way to enjoy the Keys than on a motorcycle. I wanted to ride, she wanted to drive. After much debate with the girlfriend, we decided on a compromise and took the Auto Train from Lorton, Va to Orlando, Fl. Made it a 400 mile ride vs a 1300 mile ride. Loaded the bike up on the train, and the next morning we were off to the Keys. Weather riding down was beautiful. Most of the time it was just a little cloudy, and the temps were somewhere around 80.

Unloading from the train

Girlfriend being artistic I think

Had a great time down there. Basiclly, you wake up, have a drink, and the hardest part of the day is deciding which bar you want to go to. I did the whole toursit thing at a couple spots. Went to the end of US-1, Mile 0. Also went to the southern most point of the US, was able to get a good picture there.

Southernmost Point

Sunsets were amazing

Did a little bit of fishing, lots of drinking, and had a good time all around. Eventually we had to leave, so we got on the road a day before the train was going to head back to VA. Stopped at a bar that's in the middle of no where that is apparently a big Harley hangout. We had some lunch, and there were a few Harley's around.

The plan was to ride up to Orlando and stay in a hotel over night so we could shower and not feel gross on the train. We ended up getting caught in some pretty bad thunderstorms. So we didn't quite make it to Orlando. The next day we loaded everything up on the train, and headed home. We've already been invited back next year, and the goal is for my girlfriend to be riding her own bike which we picked up just before we left.

Girlfriends bike

We had a great time in Florida, put just over 1000 miles on the bike. Only complaints about the bike are the seat, which will be getting sent to Spencer next week, and the rear shock. With two people, and about 80 pounds worth of stuff, it was just too soft. I felt like it was bouncing the entire way down the road. I have a Penseke on the way, which should help out in that department. Other than that, the bike performed wonderfully.

Yes, you have to post up or PM me the partuiculars on the train. (Shipping the bike and riding.) That sounds like a sweet idea. I have people in Florida as well and would not mind doing the same thing you did. Train to Orlando with bike and gear and ride to your prospective location in Florida. Good Stuff!!

OVER? did you say "Over"? Nothing is over until we decide its over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!!!

Auto Train

It was about $500 round trip for the two of us, and the bike. You get a dinner (which is actually pretty good), and breakfast each way. They also provide coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. There's a lounge car which you can just sit in, get some drinks/appetizers (although they are expensive, $5 for a can of beer) and watch a movie. It's nice and relaxed. You're not stuck in a seat like a plane, and you get to meet some interesting people.
