Made my first commute! - October 8, 2007, 08:34 AM

Well I survived my first commute to work on the bike...granted it's a holiday and there weren't as many cars on the road but I figured today would be the best day to do my first trial run. Today was also my first time on the beltway and it wasn't nearly as intimidating as I had predicted. I got up to about 75 mph which is also the fastest I've gone before so all in all a very good morning for me I know all you veteran riders are probably thinking big deal...75 mph that is nothing and the beltway no big deal but it was very exciting for me and I just thought I'd share my excitement with everyone!

Thanks for letting me share!

Congrats, it is a big deal! I remember my first day on the beltway in a car and everything was going by so fast.

Constantly scan and know where everything is at all times. Looking way ahead helps you know to stop way before the 2 cars in front ever even notice!

My first commute to work on the bike on I-66:

Officer (while pacing me at 10mph on the shoulder next to me): the speed limit is 55, not 82.
Me: thank you, i'm really sorry, i wasn't paying attention (i really wasn't)
Officer: No problem, just keep it down.
Me (struggled to find a way to show appreciation while driving with helmet on): Thank you.

That was about a month or so ago..... I laughed, I cried...

The first commute is great. Going back to the bus or cage after is terrible.

Congrats on your first cummute! I just started cummuting on my bike two weeks ago. It felt good to make it without incident.

Take your time and you will be a veteran before you know it. Today was one of the better bike commuting days since all the feds were off. I almost didn't ride this morning. Glad I did.

Good job. Be safe and keep an eye out for the morning morons.

Congrats...be aware of your surroundings and try your best to give yourself a buffer around cars and don't trust or assume anything.

Congrats on your first ride in and 75mph isn't slow
