Does this bike need plates? In what state? - May 1, 2007, 10:00 AM

A coworker shows up with this today.

It says 150 on the side, but the Certifice Of Origin says 149.5 CC. I understand that in MD, you must tag anything 150 CC or higher. There is a long and rich history of circumventing displacement laws with silly sized engines. I suggested that he tag it either way, just so that he doesn't have to explain it to Johnny Law every other week.

Does anyone have any input on the matter?

It does. Anything over 49cc is considered a motorcycle. It needs to be registered and you need a motorcycle endorsement to ride. Now that's in MD, VA and DC

Anything over 49cc requires an M Class. In fact I think that might change here very shortly to require anything on the open road with a motor to have an M Class.

Does that mean you'll be allowed to take the DMV test on a 49cc scooter then?

When I took Jasmine for her license, there was a guy there trying to take his test on a scooter. I remember because he argued loudly with the test instructor. And no he didn't get to take it on his scooter.

I had a friend peel off the "1" on his scooter. He couldn't drive it on the highway but he never got hassled by the cops for it either.

What would be the upside to taking the test on a 50CC bike? is the turning radius really really tight? Do they stop that much faster than the 250 rebels that they let us use?

Spaceballs is one dumb ass movie. I'm surprised I had to tell you that.

They don't let you use a bike to take the dmv test.... they do for the MSF course.

Ya, you have to bring a bike with you for test. Some kid wanted to use mine last year when I moved here. Told him for a rental fee. hehe.
