GENERATOR question - May 4, 2011, 09:48 PM

Well, I'm in the market for a cheap gas generator to run my tire warmers, and maybe my air compressor. I already checked out the local pawn shops to see what they had. Well, they had shit for a ton of money... Craigslist is giving me little results unless I want some huge generator. In any case, Freight Harbour is literally 10 minutes from my place and was thinking about one of these two. The question is, how much power would I need to run an air compressor and tire warmers?

You need a 1000W just for the warmers and from what I have read its not good to run generators on 100% load for extended period of time

Wow I didn't know you could get generators so cheap. They are probably loud as hell but who cares?

But to answer your question, I'm guessing the smaller one would work. You would have to look at the specs on the stuff you are hooking up to it and do the math. If they have a current rating in stead of power, you can convert that to power visa vi the 120V AC. I think you will need to use RMS in that calc. Throw up some links to your gadgets and I'll see if I can help you.

Well it's 12A @ 120V so 1440W. There is a little more to that in the AC world, but I think that is a conservative ballpark. Real average power is less.

Add that to DEEP's 1000W, and you need the big daddy.

Of course the comp is running all the time.

Trust me... it's worth the extra money to pick up a Honda or a Yamaha.

You won't regret it.

Generators are definitely one of those, "you get what you pay for" items.

I feel ya on the whole "you get what you pay for" but at the same time I'm not working right now If not I could get some good deals on larger generators off of craigslist. I just need something right now to use mainly for my tire warmers.
