Seeking opinions on the KLX650 and other dual sport bikes - May 23, 2008, 02:06 PM

I'm so cheap about gas that I'm even feeling the liter bike at the pump these days. I want to get something smaller, old, and cheap that I don't mind commuting on in all weather. I came across a '94 KLX 650 with a bad starter for $2000 and am thinking of offering $1300 max. Haven't seen the bike yet but let's assume everything else looks ok for a bike that old. What do you all think?

I would steer clear. Those bikes weren't big sellers and parts may be hard to find. Look at the Honda XR650L. I had one in the '90s and they pop up on Craigs list now and then. You could get a used one for a good price. I now ride a Kawasaki KLR 250 but it's too small for the highway, fun on the trails though.

In 2004 I bought a 2004 DR650 for $3k. Stock it got around 50-55mpg. Not anymore though.

Thanks guys. I noticed the KLX650s didn't enjoy a long manufacturing run, and there has to be a reason for it. I'm also eyeballing a '92 DR650 that's listed pretty cheap.

Tony, I'd love to go motard, but I don't have the budget. Has to be super cheap.

I'd stay away from the pre-'96 DRs.
