HOW-TO: Get your permit/ license - October 10, 2006, 07:00 AM

This is mainly for the newbies that come to this site wondering how they can apply for a permit and how to get their license.

DMV has a manual that you can down load to study up for your learners permit.
http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv2.pdf

They also have practice tests on their site, which is very helpful. A lot of the questions on this practice test are on the actual test as well. **NOTE, just because you can answer all of these questions correctly (on the practice test) doesn't mean that you still shouldn't read the manual.
You can try the practice tests here: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv2.pdf

There is also an example of the motorcycle skills test that is conducted in the parking lot of the DMV building (**NOTE- not all DMV locations will have a motorcycle skills course)
http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv34.pdf

If you are unable to pass the motorcycle skills test at the DMV, or do not want to go that route, another option would be to take an MSF course. Regardless if you passed the test of not, this is a valuable course to take if you are a new rider...and even useful as a Here is one place that you can do some research on if this is right for you.

LadyK posted the easy way of getting your license.

The hard way is getting stopped for a speeding ticket and having the cop notice you only have your permit and then hit you up for reckless driving instead. 1800$ bucks later, a trip to the DMV, and an appearance in front of a VA Judge and you'll have your "M" in no time.
