Lightbulb How to make a custom exhaust without a tube bender. - May 22, 2008, 07:56 AM

Warning. Motorcycle content.

Started making another set of pipes. Here's how ya do it on the cheap.

1. Buy a box of exhaust bends. HD uses 1.75" pipe. I also bought a set of headers off of eBay.

2. Place the "exhaust" (I don't have an exhaust but...) where you want it.

3. Start from the header and work your way back to the exhaust. Cut, mock-up, re-cut, tack, mock-up, turn, cut and such.

4. Once it looks like it will fit. Take it all of and weld it up.

5. Put it back on and stand proud. Here's my new front pipe. 7 pieces, tons of cuts, tacks, tears and head scratching. It was worth it:

can you please keep the motorcycle related, especially the custom motorcycle related posts to a minimum.

Thanks for the warning at least!

Looks awesome!

Nice Job.
I do have one question.
I know that the 2 exhausts should end up being the same length for performance reasons, back pressure, and is why the rear exhaust goes forward in many cases before going back if it is on same side as front.
The front cylinder usually stays within the frame and goes on the right side of the bike for dual.
Then your rear will cross over to the left so that the left can be close to the same length as the right.

I am curious how you will route the rear to go on the right without it being a very short route?

Keep the pics coming, great project!!!!!

Thanks.

The pipes will not be equal. I could have run the front pipe to right to make it shorter but it would have put it under the air cleaner and I didn't want that. Basically I decided where I wanted the end pipes and built to the motor.

Since I've been using this motor (Buell), the pipes have never been equal. I'm running a S&S super E carb that is tuned by me. Combine that with open pipes and I'm far from eeeeaking out every HP. The good news is that this bike and my previous chops were not too heavy and I have never had an issue keeping up with my friends. I'll hop on my other bikes for wheelies and such.

That's nice but not as nice as a Mini.

Are you going to be using heat wrap on the pipes?

Nope. Was thinking about this coating. Maybe hit it with my new Scotch-Brite wheel.

Was just curious if it would make much difference this way and you answered that, Thanks.
