9/21 - VCHSS Rd. 11 - Peninsula at Southwark - September 15, 2014, 08:22 AM

Directions/Info:
Peninsula 100

Video from last year:

History:

“OLD SCHOOL RACING”

The theme for this years Peninsula Classic motorcycle race is “Old School Racing”. The original Peninsula was called the Peninsula 100 and was held on city watershed property in Newport News with the Newport News Dept of Parks & Recreation also co-sponsoring the event. The race was a true 100 mile event with each lap about 20 miles spread over 2000 acres. Race time on a good day lasted over 4 hours. If it rained, deep ruts would develop in our swamp sections, some portions of the course would be a foot deep in water and the race would extend well past the 4 hours. The actual start time of the single event format was determined by the time an adjacent church completed its services. And since the race crossed a railroad track at four locations, on more than one occasion riders were forced to stop and wait for a train to pass and “yes” some of these trains were long and took minutes to pass. It was just luck of the draw as to whether your competitor made it across the tracks before you were held up. In addition to the train track crossings, the course also incorporated some pretty long and very fast fire roads that were tied together with tight single track trails and swamp sections. Only older riders will remember the ‘burnt over section’; it was notorious for being long and extremely tight where even 28” bars were too wide! There were no mini classes and typically only one or maybe two young riders would try their hand in the main event (does anyone remember David Newton as our only mini bike rider). Nobody made the finish without pitting at least once and sometimes twice! Even stopping in the middle of the race to make a chain adjust was a normal occurrance.

While this year’s Peninsula Classic will not be 100 miles nor will the race last anywhere near 4 hours, it will have the ‘flavor’ of the original Peninsula races in the sense that several fast fire roads will be tied together with single track trails (but nothing like the ‘burnt over section’). Lap length should be somewhere around 7 miles with everyone being treated to the same course. As in the original years, a small group of riders and former riders have banded together to promote this race with nearly all proceeds used to promote the following years event. The group which calls itself Peninsula Trailriders only exists now to promote this race (at one time the group consisted over a 100 people and leased a place called Cycle Park where we had a hare scrambles course, an MX course, a dirt drag and a 3/8-mile flat track.

This is the 39th annual Peninsula Classic race. Through storms, hot weather, beautiful fall days and sometimes during a northeastern or near a hurricane, we’ve never missed a year since 1976. It’s evolved into the longest continuous running motorcycle event of any type in Virginia along with also being one of the oldest motorcycle off road races held in the east. The competition should be fierce and the course should be fun. Except for two bridge crossings, every part of the course is natural terrain; nothing man made. Spectators will once again be treated to their favorite rider returning to the parking area every half lap. Sign-up, scoring and food this year will occur in the shadows of the old 1900’s school house that still sits on the property. We hope you’ll come join us and treat yourself to some “Old School Racing in Surry, Va”.

Hearing this race might be a live engine start instead of the normal starts.

Too close to miss. Time to quit making excuses and go race. Need to figure out what class to race though.

Looks like it was in previous years. Might be neat to try it at least once. You know someone is going to loop it, lol.

Just hop in the Z class or trail rider class if you are not sure. Or jump in F with me and you get a shot at getting a trophy.

This race and the 11/2 race (Pipsico - looks like the same or an adjacent property) are the last two that are close to our area. I'm hoping to drive down super early the morning of the race.

F it, I'm in as long as the weather is nice. Do they provide numbers for the bike?

Yeah, they will give you stick on numbers if you need them.

This was a fun and fast course. The woods stuff was difficult to pass. The open stuff was dusty as hell. I blew turn-in's to woods sections multiple times. M

My started became disconnected on the second lap. The hurt to the tune of maybe a minute per lap. On the upside, my last lap was my fastest by nearly 1.5 minutes.

Now I'm going to lay here like a puddle. Shoulder is sore. Yay!

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back....Chileeeeee's bay back...
