Rear Tire recommendations? - October 7, 2013, 04:14 PM

Well after the, let's say "interesting" day at The Cove on Sunday, I am in need of a new rear tire on the XR. Reason being, the Frankenbike muffler (wrong one for the XR apparently) fell off somewhere on the trail and caused the severely shortened system to contact the rear tire. No big deal as it was a rapidly wearing Cheng Shin. So that is the reason for the question.

What is a good tire to look at as a replacement and should I consider a size change from the 110/90/19? I prefer non trials tires.

I'm liking the shinko 523 I've got on the back of the kx now, cheap too (duh, shinko). Good traction and seems to be wearing pretty well. You sure you have a 19" on there? My old xr had a 17" and I thought they'd moved to 18" by the 90s.

Yeah, that was a typo, it's an 18. Thanks for catching it.

<cough>bark busters</cough>

Michellin s-12 is what I have on the rear. Or a dunlop geomax-51 is good as well.

For the front I either use the geomax-51 or a bridgestone m59.

So a couple of guys noticed areas where the trials tires don't work well. Places where you need to dig to get traction. (mud, sand, really loose sandy soil.)

Tires - change often, keep the edges sharp. You will be fine. At about $70 a tire they are cheap.

Oh yeah, spare levers and perches. Also, cable maintenance is a good thing on a dirt bike. Cause breaking a cable from lots of use way out in the woods could suck.

Anybody got video of Dave binning the bike?

18" tire like mine? I'll be tossing a set of tires soon enough if you want used.

Well, I have frequent fetish miles at RockymountainATV.com. It works for me because I'm too lazy to drive anywhere and since I'm already at the computer....

Oh yeah....did you notice my bar setup? I have high risers and high bars. They let me stand up a lot easier for long durations.

I didn't notice the setup, I was concentrating too hard on not keeling over in the woods.

Wow, that's real nice. And yeah, I have a hard time getting him to shut up.

I have 2.5-3 inch risers for the GPR to mount under the bar on the triples. Then I added generic 1 inch risers (Like $25 at RMATV) on top of that. Plus the taller bars. (Fatbars - I've turned stock 7/8's bars into pretzels on more than one occasion.)

I also lowered the footpegs 1/2 an inch with Fastway pegs.

And added an Enduro Engineering overstuffed tall seat. Soft, comfy, less monkeybutt, and you are higher up so it's easier to get out of the seat when you need to. Though I generally let the first rock/bump pitch me into a standing position.

And go pick up the Dirtwise video from Shane Watts. It really does help with simple basics for trail riding. Nathan Woods' video Offroad is ok, but not as good.

And pick up the bottom end dyna-ring / rekluse if you can for your bike. That will prevent stalling and having to continually kickstart. I used to have to do that on my YZ400. By the end of a 2 hour race I hated that bike.
