TIME TO MOBILIZE!!! -- ORV Trail Activism & Advocacy Thread - November 19, 2013, 08:31 AM

Let's face it--there are extremely few places to ride off road, and the ones we have are slowly getting squeezed out. Most recently, it seems that Stoneleigh Farm has been targeted by Frederick County and closed.

We can no longer afford to be weekend warriors, just showing up to ride whenever we feel like it. We have to become a voice in our local and regional governances or else face the prospect of having ZERO places to ride. We need to get off our asses and work behind the ride days to change this trend.

Trails do not open and maintain themselves. We need to organize and commit to supporting our hobby. The mountain biker community does this tremendously well, and so can we. Stay tuned for more, and post up your ideas and commitments to participate!

Today, we are declaring that we will not be treated like rowdy criminals anymore. There is nothing inherently evil about dirt bikes and ATVs, nor is there anything wrong with the people who own and operate them. We've been pushed around for long enough, and now it's time to push back.

Mods/Admins, please consider stickying this thread. Thanks.

We can start by contacting Frederick County, Maryland, about their recent bulldozing of Stoneleigh Farm. I'll gather the contacts and put together a form letter. Let's inundate them with appeals.

If you are on Facebook, and I know most of you are, go Like the page Motocross Council. The guy running it is trying to lead the charge to get trails and motocross tracks in CENTRAL Maryland, not just way the hell out in the panhandle.

Kyler on the DAMN Riders board is involved in MD State ORV advocacy and might be a good starting point to find out where we should point our efforts.

Where did you find this info about Stoneleigh? People were just in talks with him as recently as Wednesday of last week about opening during the winter or on certain day when there are enough riders. Link to this info?

F'ing ridiculous. I wonder what would happen if he just allowed his "friends" to ride there and took donations.

Best way to address this is be relentless about getting a public ride site on state- or county-owned property. I'm looking closely at Patapsco around where I-70 and US40 cut through. I figure, you already have the noise and the emissions so why not add an ORV area? The terrain there is super crazy too--would end up being similar to Taskers.

He's been doing that for decades (sans the donation part though, I think).

Why is Fredneck closing down an offroad park? That's like MoCo shutting down a Starbucks or a yoga studio.

Because Frederick isn't Fredneck anymore. It's pretentious hipsters and Gen-Xers who bought country living but can't let go of city life.

It's going to be sweet when electrics allow you to have tracks\riding close to the city.
