My new paper weight... - September 10, 2010, 10:29 PM

So, I fell into a little project bike. This guy I know lost his job as a warehouse manager and had to get rid of a couple bikes he had stored there. All had been spoken for except a little '81 R100rs that was tucked away for 9 years. It's got "Made In W. Germany" stamped all over it.

He thought the motor was locked, but a quick yank of the plugs and an in- gear roll proved otherwise. I certainly did not mention this to him, and quietly brought her home.
The first thing I needed to do was get the old gas out of the tank and clean it. This was also the first hurdle. The ratcheting mechanism broke, so I had to drill a hole and use a screw to hold both halves together. Luckily, I found that the head will fit nicely under the raised part of the lift ring. I destroyed the trim piece that goes around the cap... oh well.

Threw a fistfull of washers and bolts in the tank along with a couple quarts of degreaser and pulled a bunch of crap out. Rinsed and repeated several times.

Cleaned the carbs and replaced all the rubber bits in them. Diaphragms and hard parts ok, so they just got a scrubbing.

Fuel lines are shot, so I'll get some tomorrow and replace them and the filters. Hopefully I'll get her to fire up....
I'll know soon enough. Updates as I progress.

Good luck with that! There are tons of airhead forums to helps you out. Check the charging system...notoriously weak point.

Nah, they are talking about another kind of "lines" in that song *snifffff*
Fuel lines good, filters good, battery good.....aaaaaaaaaannnnndddd?

After 3 tries of 5 seconds on the starter..........

FIRE!!!!

The bike is shaking a bit, but I'll see if it smooths out. Still running 1/2 choke.
I take a quick temp reading of the exhaust pipes. Right= 237*f/Left= 103*f. Damn! Only on 1 cylinder
I did a quick spark check by using a screw in the plug boot and it does spark. That doesn't meen the plug is though. I'll be messing with that tomorrow. Final check on the headders: Right= 573*/ :Left= 121*f

After taking a spin and finding that the higher rpm's were ok, I ripped out the carbs again and re cleaned the low speed jets. Used more cleaner and compressed air. Reassembled, filled the bowls and POW! Both heads running similar temps, idles smooth. Took another spin to burn off the cobwebs. I'll do a sync and reset the idle speed tomorrow. Wait till you see the redneck contraption.

Synchronized the carbs this morning. Yes, I'm an early bird.
It's pretty easy on a boxer, everything is so accessible.

I set the A/F mix and idle screws at the standard setting initially. This gave me an idle speed of 1200 rpm which is too high so I backed off the idle until I had 800. Then went in 1/16" at a time until they were even at about 950- 1000 rpm, the high end of the range recommended.
My hillbilly engineering sync tool:

1/4" ID tube, a 1x2, and a couple ounces of ATF.
I think she is running a little rich, but I still have check/ adjust valves and timing. After that, I'll re-check sync and analyze the exhaust gasses, then set mix screws accordingly.
Just got to get some gaskets first.

Yeah, really torn between the cafe and "showroom" resto. Haven't picked a direction yet. I got some time though. Realy going to focus on mechanical (ugh, needs rotors in 0.5mm) and thourogh cleaning first. It will eventually be handed over to my daughter, so I guss I should ask her
